Educating the children – how to improve Spanish attitudes to animals

Galgo spainFamiliar story. This poor podenca was abandoned in Valencia. She was wandering the streets. She got pregnant.

She had her babies, and then some kids got hold of them; used them like toys – put them in a box up a tree so she could not get them. She cried in vain at the bottom of the tree and the kids laughed! Can you imagine the distress of this poor Mum!

Fortunately a lady intervened, sent the kids packing – I’d have done a great deal more!

But the babies are now in foster care, so this poor podenca has lost her babies, she is looking for them, her milk is still coming so now she has mastitis. Fortunately the lady is feeding her and getting closer to her. The podenca needs foster care and adoption.

So, how are we to expect the Spanish to improve their attitude towards animals? It seems to me it is only by educating the young children.

GalgospaintwoThey have to appreciate the miracle of birth, whether it be a brother/sister, or an animal. It is still one of the greatest miracles of life.

And they have to be taught respect – something which is sadly lacking in western youth these days! Respect for themselves and, more importantly, respect for others. And respect for animals.

They need to be able to experience the absolute joy of a positive relationship with animals, and what animals can teach humans.

This has to be done in the home and in schools. They have to respect animals.

What do you suggest we do?
