  • Galgo Chapapote – stolen 4 years ago – just discovered

One of the articles in my book on the Galgo Espanol is about theft of galgos. Now you might wonder why ever anyone would steal a galgo when they can be picked up for nothing on the street. This story will explain. Thank you to Greyhounds Rescue Holland for the translation. Watch the video here.

Scooby English blog – update on adoptions of dogs from Scooby, plus the work they do in schools to educate the younger generation of Spanish.

  • Scooby English Blog – update from Fermin on the galgo situation

Back home after a week in the UK with my son and grandsons, and my daughter. So now, a few news items for you.

Please check out the Scooby English blog, here’s the latest from Fermin. This year seems to be even worse for disposal of galgos by the hunters. And remember, Scooby need the money to feed, passport and sterilize all these hounds, plus finding forever homes for them.

  • Sighthound Underground – SHUG – helping home hounds in America

SHUG logoSHUG – Sighthound Underground – is another new association in the USA involved in helping sighthounds, including galgos. Here’s what the director Michael says.

‘Yes, we just formed this past December 2012 and are just getting started. We’ve rehomed one dog so far and have a Galgo currently in fostercare. I need to get both of them up on the website and I will use your other suggestions, too as we work on our content! (I suggested when you formed, which shelters in Spain you support, news stories, rehoming stories, what donations are used for.)

  • Galgos lost – in Spain!

Caroline very kindly went through my list of galgo and podenco associations and sorted it out into countries and weeded out the ones which were duplicated. I’m working through making all the Internet links, which means visiting each website briefly. And I have to say I am not impressed by the number of lost galgos posted on some of the French and Spanish websites! The number of galgos needing homes is overwhelming – thanks to the lack of breeding control in Spain – and the number being adopted is also huge. To such an extent that, for quite a while, I have been concerned that some associations are not rigid enough in their requirements on a home check, and do not emphasise enough to adoptants that they cannot let the dogs run free….not for months in most cases and in some cases, never! I won’t mention which associations, but I have to admit to being surprised at one or two advertising lost galgos!

  • Two galga pups saved from Malaga perrera, now in the US thanks to GRIN

Nice story about two lucky galgo pups saved from the El Paraiso perrera at Malaga, now in the US. April Lamb, mentioned in the article, has been working hard with Danielle Hart to try and persuade National Geographic magazine to publicise the plight of the galgos. Join in the letter-writing campaign published yesterday.

  • Galga Vida, Amigos de Los Galgos appeals for help for her

I’m in the UK again for a week, so limited to work I can do on the computer – some posts I scheduled to publish whilst I am away. But this one is just in, from Nuria Blanco of Amigos de Los Galgos. I don’t have a photo, but you can see all on the weblink.

‘Please help save Vida, this poor young galgo has been in hospital for a few days already. She has lost one food and she has problems in all the other three feet. At the moment, it is impossible for her to walk.’

  • Planning a holiday – help the dogs in Spain – holidays for dog lovers

Dog Lovers HolidaysThe daffodils are out, buds on the lilac tree, new shoots on the honeysuckle – Spring is on its way where I live in France. If you are thinking holidays – but as with so many people – including me – can’t afford to pay a lot, think about going to Spain and staying with a refuge or on a dog-lovers holiday and help the volunteers with the rescued dogs. What could be more enjoyable and more rewarding?!

Think about going to Scooby, they have hundreds and hundreds of dogs, plus other animals. Go and stay for a week or two and join the team. Contact Scooby. Or a dog-lovers holiday at Tara Casa in Murcia, where you can help dogs, destress, create a mosaic…what about a week in Malaga at finca 112carlotagalgos, help with the hounds always welcome…

Any other associations who’d like to be added to the list, please post below.
