She has to go to the vet and have two lumps looked at (one on a breast and one on a side), neutered, chipped and vaccinated, analytics and disease tests. Zenda needs them.

    She is in Huelva capital

  • Galgo Senorito now with Galgo Rescue Almeria – a very sick galgo

    GRA Senorito 1 400
    From Galgo Rescue Almeria

‘ A few days ago we collected this galgo at Clínica Veterinaria Puerto De Mazarròn.

In collaboration with Friends of Mazarrón Animals, this big boy, Señorito, can look forward to a new, different and better life.
Unfortunately, he tested positive for both Dirofilaria and Leishmania, 2 of the toughest Mediterranean diseases. How much bad luck can you have.

Both originate from a sting of an unsightly mosquito, but a sting with major consequences and if not treated eventually fatal. However, you can perfectly protect them against this with pipettes, collars or even a vaccination. But that costs some money and to hunters their dogs are not worth that to them.

  • Physiotherapy for your dog

Several years ago when I adopted my galgo Polar from Pepis Refuge in Pedrera, I consulted a canine physio for treatment to his damaged hind knee joint. It was interesting to see that the work she did on him was very similar to that used by my physio on me when I injured my shoulder.

  • Protectora Scooby – beautiful perrigals for adoption

    Scooby perrigalgos 400 4 2024
Perrigals are galgo x and Scooby has these 2 beauties hoping for forever homes.

‘We have some beautiful perrigals and it’s amazing that they are still here at the shelter without anyone ever asking about them! They are brother and sister, very devoted to each other but no problem separating them either. Still pretty young, about 2 or 3 years old, very playful, great with other dogs and love people. They have all the good of galgos, just a little fatter. Their names are Dorotea, chip: 8428 and Gonzalo, chip: 9239. Adorable and need out of a kennel now!

  • Galgos 112 – young abandoned galgo now safe

    Galgos 112 puppy 4 2024 400
From Galgos 112, who have nbeen rescuing Spanish hunting dogs for 16 years.

A few days ago we received a notice of this abandoned baby, very hungry and thirsty. What did we do? Being overwhelmed as dogs waiting for a family, we couldn’t look away and luckily for him there was a companion nearby where the little one took refuge.

Result that Tico has joined our family with the extra effort of taking on another daycare payment.
The young boy has been dewormed and cleared from being eaten by fleas and ticks. Not surprising that he’s not carrying a chip.

Welcome Ticorrón! Now it’s our turn to ask for help to pay for his daycare, and or family that can take him in while he recovers.

Thank you if you can help.

  • Galgos 112 – full to bursting but still they find room for abandoned galgos

    Galgos 112 brothers 1 400
Hunting in Spain finished at the end of January and of course the Shelters are all full. And with the Spanish hunters not letting up on their overbreeding of their dogs, the situation year on year foes not change.

    Galgos 112 say this.

A few weeks ago we had to make the hard decision to close our doors to new dogs at least until some of the Galgos and Podencos we have are fostered or adopted by a family.

We can’t keep helping more dogs for two reasons:

    1. Out of space for the dogs.
    2. Lack of economic capacity to cover all your expenses.

Since then we have only attended to some urgent cases to which it was impossible to say no, and they have also arrived at Galgos 112 these two galgos, we believe they are brothers, that someone left tied up at the door of one of the residences we collaborate with. We couldn’t stop helping them.

Their names are Barry and Otis, they are two 3-year-old galgos, unidentified, sociable and not afraid of people. They are healthy and their vet protocol is almost complete. They are available for adoption

  • April – Adopt a greyhound/galgo month

In the very beginning of my involvement with galgos in Spain and working with Charl del Rio who later founded 112garlotta galgos. I published an appeal for homes for 2 galgas rescued by Charl from a perrera. Angela Yardley contacted us and subsequently adopted them both.

This is an appeal from Forever Hounds Trust established by Angela about adopting one of the Trust’s greyhounds.

  • Vets in the UK – taken over by hedge funds and insurance companies result in exorbitant fees!

    RCVS_Practice_Standards_Scheme-_Accredited_Practice 350
Vet groups in the UK have been taken over by hedge funds, insurance companies and other groups concerned only with making a profit. This results in fees which many pet owners cannot afford. For people on their own or elderly, a dog or cat is their only companion and the situation is such now that they cannot afford to have a dog or cat because they can’t afford the diabolical vet fees. As wth most things in the UK – it’s yet again RIP OFF BRITAIN! Whatever happened to the caring society?

My experience recently was that my Podenca Rosie had bad diarhorrea and starvation for 3 days did not sort it. Wouldn’t you know it, it was a bank holiday in the UK! So I telephoned my vet surgery which was closed and was referred to another surgery. Usual consultation – check heart, pulse, temperature, gums – prescribed a probiotic paste. Consultation fee – £288 inc vat – total bill £341. I’ve paid it, of course, but that is a huge amount when I’m long retired and living on pensions.

Below is a letter posted on facebook by a vet which says it all.

    From David Thomson

My letter to the RCVS (Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons)

I am dictating this letter so my spelling and grammar may be incorrect for that I apologise.

It is with a heavy heart and a lot of depressive soul searching that I am sending this email to a governing body that I used to hold in great esteem.
