  • Galgos Rescue Almeria – storm damage meaning costly repairs for the hound shelter

    Storm damage 1 400 1 2023
    From Sandy Galgoslover.

A couple of nights ago we suffered a storm and strong winds which unfortunately caused a lot of damage to our Rescue center. A large part of the fence has been torn loose and our storage space has been completely destroyed.

In addition to our usual daily tasks, we now have days of cleaning up debris. A solution will also have to be found for the storage space.

  • The Galgo Espagnol – a majestic dog treated as trash by Spanish Galgueros

    SOS Levrieri poster 9 2021 400
The galgo, unlike all other dog breeds, was not created and selected by man, it is a product of nature already represented in the first graffiti of upper Mesopotamia and has reached us practically intact.

The man, who transforms everything, did not feel the need to intervene on the galgo.

He was the first animal to collaborate with man, he is morbidly attached to his master, he is lazy and loves to sleep, but he is ready to transform into a very fast hunter, with an attentive eye and snappy muscles.

He is tender, affectionate, reserved, never intrusive, discreet presence by your side.

It is a majestic dog, fast as the wind and light as a feather.

One of the most revered races in antiquity, to the point of being forbidden its ownership to peasants and poor people for the exclusive use of nobles and rich people.

  • Galga Eden in his forever home

    Eden ticks 400 8 2022
Do you remember the terrible sights of this poor galgo covered in ticks – I’ve never seen such a bad case in all the 16 years I’ve been involved with galgo and podenco rescue.

After a concerted effort by Galgos Rescue Almeria and their team of vets, Eden made an amazing recovery and this is a heartwarming photo of her in her forever home.

  • Protectora Scooby Newsletter 5 – the WeWard app and Education

The WeWard app is good news for walkers, dog owners & Scooby alike. Link the app to the pedometer on your phone and when you walk your dog (or even without the dog), you clock up points and can convert them into cash donations
for Scooby. Available in English, French, German, Spanish and Italian, it can be downloaded from the AppStore and Google Play. Apparently dog owners walk 1,600 kilometres every year, so with 1£$€ per 100 points, all the dog owners reading this could boost Scooby’s funds just by walking the dog.

Education Project : A Wet Nose In Your Life

This year we launched our education project, “A Wet Nose In Your Life” (“Un Hocico En Tu Vida”) which is directed at schools, youth groups and parent associations. This important venture teaches young people, their parents and guardians about the importance of properly relating to our dogs and understanding how they “talk” to us. This is fundamental to the prevention of bites. Our trainer, Pablo, is keen to talk to all education authorities and youth services about running the programme in their
organisations. He goes along to the class or session and gives an interactive, informative, compassionate talk to the group. In his experience the students are participative and ask a lot of questions. They also enthusiastically tell anecdotes about their own pets. We are always grateful to the teaching staff for warmly welcoming the topic and leading by example with a strong
interest. Almost every participant gains something from the event and has better information about understanding the signals dogs send us.
