  • Galgos in Chile – they suffer abuse too

Argentina and Chile both use galgos for hunting. Every year, more than 500 greyhounds are abandoned in Chile after being exploited in racing and hunting. Galgos Chile have been working since 2018 to rescue, rehabilitate, and rewrite the destiny of greyhounds in Chile. Because they didn’t choose their past, but you can choose their future. You can be part of their rescue and give them a loving home.

This is the story of Galgos Chile, translated into English if your computer doesn’t automatically translate the Spanish.

  • Galgos in Lithuania

I’ve been concerned that some galgos and podencos are now travelling as far as Lithuania and Poland to forever homes. I’ve googled searching for adoption associations in those countries, to reassure myself that there is back up if the dog does not settle in the home. This is a post I found on facebook about lure coursing with galgos in Lithuania.

‘Tina’s first lure coursing competition with a bang! Tina won not only 1st place among galgo, but also 2nd among all-breed 60 participants! But that’s not the most important thing, but that the dog simply enjoyed and fulfilled the need for the hunting! A fascinating view to see how the nature of the kite unfolds – to run and hunt with eyes! I had goosebumps looking at Tina
    Kurt running is something else!

  • Stomach cancer in dogs

    Bo face 1 400
    Living with a stomach tumour

Not a galgo but our blind podenco Bo (Bocelli) who we adopted in 2022. In 2023 he had a small tumour removed from his stomach. We were warned it could return. He is the third of our Spanish hounds to suffer from stomach cancer. Galga Sahara had an inoperable one many years ago and galgo Bracken had one in 2021, not long after our return to the UK after living in France for 19 years.

In February 2025, 2 years later after diagnosis. Bo’s stomach started to swell again. A scan at the vets confirmed our worst fears – the tumour had returned and this time it was judged inoperable, as it could be attached to either the spleen or the liver.

In himself, Bo was his usual happy cheeky self, eating normally, playing with our other podenco. But as his stomach swelled, he hadn’t the energy to go on the long walks of previous years.

Candy Cane International Rescue saves greyhounds and whippets from the Chinese meat trade and bring them back to the UK and USA for foster and rehoming. They have two, Lady already homed in the UK and the other Merlin now safe in their China kennels.

Kerry says ‘We’ve been researching Merlin’s breed, and we believe he belongs to one of the rarest breeds in the world! We’ve had a couple of these incredible dogs, including Lady, who arrived in the UK two years ago. I spoke with her owner and she still hasn’t found another of the same breed in the UK.

  • Things to remember when rehoming a rescue dog

    Little black dog lost 400 3 2024
Some people expect too much too soon when they home an adopted dog. It takes time, patience and understanding – especially as most Spanish hunting dogs have suffered maltreatment in their previous lives. Many galgos are adopted abroad, which means the following allowances have to be made as it could be weeks or months before the dog really settles –

    1. the dog may have been a street dog surviving for weeks or months
    2. it may not have experienced any kind humans
    3. it may not know how to live in an enclosed space such as a house
    4. it may not have been walked on a lead
    5. it could very well be used to living with other dogs
    6. it could have left behind friends, a particular mate
    7. it’s had a long journey in vans and planes
    8. it’s a strange country with different weather and language.

Below is the story of a poor little dog – not a galgo – who was the victim of just such misunderstanding.

  • Galga Panda – 8 years living in a box

    GdS Panda 1 400 8 2023
From Tina Solera at Galgos del Sol

‘Panda basically lived 8yrs of her life in this plastic box. How can this even be legal? She’s a scared girl 9yrs old who’s just the sweetest thing. Now is the time to send cat prayers because if she’s good with cats she will be heading to the beautiful countryside of Finland. So in the comments send your ‘be good to the kitties’ prayers.’

    Panda now, what a stunner.

  • Galgos Rescue Almeria – 2 happy galgas

    2 galgos 1 400 2020
From Sandy at Galgos Rescue Almeria.

Diansa and Fontanela arrived at our Rescue center on October 1, 2020 and were given away by their owner. When the sisters were picked up from a local vet in Mazarrón Fonda was shaking all over. She was so scared and every time her sister Dia disappeared from sight she desperately searched for her. It soon became clear to us that these sisters were inseparable and that a future without each other was unthinkable, not even possible.

The search could start looking for a perfect match, which was not easy since the sisters were not so young. Days/weeks/months went by but we didn’t gave up. These sisters would have a new future together at all costs. Dia & Fonda saw many friends leave, but finally 10 months after their arrival at Galgosrescuealmeria, both sisters could leave their past behind and pack their bags with the nice memory of their stay at GRA. It was an emotional farewell because these girls were so special.
