12 October – the beginning of the Spanish hunting year
October 12, marks the beginning of the hunting season and with it, the terrible countdown for thousands of greyhounds and hunting dogs in Spain. Once again, these noble animals, used and exploited, face an uncertain fate: abandonment, mistreatment, or death when they cease to be useful for hunting. The cycle of abuse is repeating. Countless innocent lives are already sentenced. Behind every specimen of breeding, there is a potential discard. PACMA, SEPRONA & UCOMA – meet to discuss helping Spanish hunting dogs
On October 2nd, we held a very important meeting in Madrid with SEPRONA (National Service of the Environment) and the Central Operational Unit for the Environment (UCOMA) of the Civil Guard. I was accompanied by Eva Ramos, legal advisor for PACMA, and our objective was clear: to demand more resources, more inspections, and a greater commitment to protecting hunting dogs.
We met with Major General Carlos Sarrión, head of SEPRONA, and several representatives from UCOMA to address a reality we can no longer ignore: the neglected situation faced by thousands of dogs used for hunting in Spain. (more…)

BIG POLICE INTERVENTION – REFUGIO KIMBA 48 ANIMALS SAVED

FINALLY THE END OF THE HELL.
On Monday 6th of February, the SPAP Refugio Kimba collaborated with Seprona Police (Guardia Civil) by rescuing 48 animals abandoned in horrendous conditions in Chiclana, Cadiz. The images were terrible, I think we will not be able to forget that scene ever in our whole life.
The smell was awful, corpses’ smells, we could not avoid tears just thinking how many dog would have died in that hell. It was really difficult to breath and be in a good mood, but we had to be so strong be possible in order to save all the animals. Their cries and moans were breaking our souls.

Appache in Chella, Valencia – working on educating the locals
Maureen lives in a small village in the Valencia region called Chella. Here she writes about becoming yet another failed fosterer!
‘In the village is a fabulous group of Spanish ladies who I have joined to help with the protection of animals. The group is called Appache , it is a not for profit organisaion. They operate on a foster home basis and take any animal in need into their care. The organisation is only 2 years old and they are doing a fabulous job in an area where fund raising is challenging. They have welcomed me into the group and I was the first non Spanish person to join and have now recruited some of my mates too.
I was checking the Appache facebook page one afternoon when I saw a request for a foster home for a little black galga who had been abandoned. She was underweight by around 5 kilos and was sick with Leishmanosisi and ehrlichiosis.

Pepis Dog Refuge – puppies need protection
Monique and Scarlet are 2 galgas who were abandoned by Pepis Dog Refuge, heavily pregnant. Between them they have 18 surviving puppies. These all need protection – vaccinations, michipping, etc. – especially vaccinations. With over 70 dogs are the refuge, donations are desperately needed to pay for the puppies’ protction. Please donate , say it is for puppies’ protection.

Levriers sans Frontieres – demand justice for Elias

A French woman has 2 galgos and a Dogue argentin (not sure what they are called in English, Mastiffs maybe?) named Elias? She wanted to adopt a third galgo and decided to have Elias euthanized to make room for the new galgo! He was only 6 years old and she had had him since he was a puppy.

Scooby takes the El Galgo Senior galgos after Pat tragically dies.
After a tragic accident, El Galgo Senior association in Alicante lost their president Pat. Scooby have stepped in to take over 100 galgos from their shelter.
