Early in the year when I read the Spanish Royals were to visit the Queen at Windsor and I contacted my friend Polly Matthewson of Podenco Alliance about it, suggesting a demonstration, I had no idea how it would grow. So thanks to Polly, Martin Podman French of Podenco Support South West, Dawn Karen Walker (Manchester March) and Irene Allen (Glasgow March) for taking up the idea and developing it to the marvellous day we all had on 1st May 2016 publicising the suffering of the Spanish hounds and showing what marvellous pets they can make. Herewith my photos from the March in Manchester – sadly it rained but didn’t dampen the spirits and we handed out lots of leaflets about the plight of the Spanish hunting dogs. (Spot me on the left holding the big banner!) The London organisers handed in a petition to the Spanish Embassy and also No 10 Downing Street.

Are galgos carriage hounds?
The Junta in Andalucia had no regard for the health and well being of galgos when they rescinded the law banning hounds being trained from motorised vehicles – whether vans, 4×4, quad bikes, motorbike. This ignoramus would have got round the ban anyway…can you believe this?!! How close are those galgos to the carriage wheels! They don’t stand a chance if he puts the horse into trot!!! I’d like to rope him to the back of that cart….seen in the area of Pepis Dog Refuge, Pedrera, Seville!
You may just be able to see there are 3 dogs – the chain of the white one in the middle is going over the carriages leaf springs, and the only way for that poor dog to get on the inside again is to get right beside that carriage wheel!

Greyhounds/Galgos make superb Theraphy dogs.
My first greyhound had such a superb temperament that she became a PAT dog…Pets As Therapy…in the UK and regularly visited an old folks’ home to spend time with the residents, especially those who had been dog owners but couldn’t have a dog in the home.
Here is a lovely story about a Spanish Galga who is doing a similar job – but this time in New Mexico in a prison.

A hell of a life for a galgo in Spain
From a post by Jack Leonard on my Save the Galgos page on facebook
‘This coming weekend of January 10 will begin the long awaited Spanish National Championship for the Galgo in the village of Madrigal de las Altas Torres. Thousands upon thousands of galgos have been competing this season all for the foolish dreams of their owners that they will produce the Champion of Spain. The competition is now down to a handful of dogs and the excitement is building.

Pedrera, Seville – abandoned dogs – the nightmare continues…
Pepis Dog Refuge, Pedrera, Seville – over 70 dogs to clean and feed – and get adopted!
2015 – the start of a new year – in the first week 2 puppies and 4 galgos have been dumped at the gates, one of the galgos in bad condition. The situation is desperate – it costs 700 euros/month to feed the dogs. Please help Jane and Alan – sponsor and donate here. And anyone willing to organise fundraising, please get in touch. Anyone do car boot sales in the UK? Please help!
