  • Spanish hunter – banned from keeping dogs ignores and continues…

    🔴 A hunter convicted of the Cabra horror case, tried again for having animals despite being banned.
    The original case dates back to October 30, 2020, when Asociación Galgos del Sur, along with the Cabra Local Police and the Guardia Civil, rescued and confiscated 24 dogs, mostly mongrels and mutts, from the farm, which was dubbed the “farm of horrors.”
    The convicted individuals chained some of the animals to the farm’s waterless wells, left without food, surrounded by filth and the remains of other dogs that had died on the spot, and with no shelter to take refuge from the harsh weather conditions, relying solely on plastic bags and containers with metal edges.

    Now she can be a mum for all her babies and watch them grow up till they are old enough to go their own way.

    Late week, our van headed to Los Gallardos to pick up a 2-year-old girl. She had been used for competitive racing, but due to injuries to her hind leg, she was no longer considered “useful.”  At the rescue center, she is now finally receiving the rest, care, and time she needs to recover. We will continue to monitor her progress closely and share more updates soon.

  • Fundacion Benjamin Mehnert in Seville – over 400 dogs need help

    WE NEED HELP. NOW MORE THAN EVER.   There are times when a protector doesn’t need applause.  Today we have over 400 animals in our care. Over 400 lives that depend entirely on us to eat, receive veterinary care and have a chance at a future.  Among them are more than 40 animals with complex and serious veterinary treatments. Injured, sick dogs, recovering from surgeries, animals needing daily medication, tests, income and constant care. They are added to our cats and many other cases that require continuous attention.

    The reality is we don’t have public aid.  We don’t receive grants to cover this work.  Everything we do, every rescue, every operation, every thoughtbag, every medicine, every life saved, exists because of the people who decide to help us.  Thanks to you guys. (more…)

    It’s not too late to volunteer at a Spanish rescue shelter for your holidays in 2026.  Fundacion Benjamin Mehnert in Seville explains what is involved and how grateful the associations are for all the help they can get.  Contact a shelter direct, they usually provide accommodation for volunteers too.

  • Galgo puppies abandoned in a cave in Vera, Almeria, Spain! Now safe with Galgos Rescue Almeria

    Last Sunday, two tiny galgo puppies arrived at the rescue center. Only six to seven weeks old… far too young to already face the harsh reality of this world. At that moment, we could not share much information yet, because there were still other dogs in danger. Their safety had to come first before the truth could be revealed.

    But deep down, we already knew that terrible things were happening in the backstreets of Vera (a large commercial town near the coast in Almeria) — things no one should ever have to witness. Places where innocent animals are born into pure misery. Where a mother tries to raise her puppies surrounded by fear, filth, hunger, and abuse. It breaks your heart over and over again. (more…)

  • How long is too long to leave a dog alone?

    Dogs are pack animals, they prefer company, whether it is another dog, cat or human.  Many suffer from separation anxiety.  We have always had more than one dog, although now we are down to just one and take her with us most places we go.

    So how long should a dog reasonably be expected to be left alone.

     

  • Galgo Batman hoping for a forever home

    BATMAN – Small in size, black and white, with the sweet face of a puppy, Batman is a gentle, sensitive, and very kind galgo.  The shelter is far too difficult an environment for him.  Being small and delicate, he struggles in such an intense and competitive setting.  He needs to leave as soon as possible and find a calm, protected home where he can live peacefully, relax, and feel safe.

    Like many male galgos, Batman is affectionate, tender, and forms a deep bond with people.  He is also good with other dogs.  Batman needs peace, love… and a real chance.
