  • Update Galgo Racing Malaga – more urgent emails to send – please help stop this!

Please everyone, your help is still needed to stop galgo racing in Malaga. 112carlotagalgos and Galgos en Familia are pulling out all the stops. Here’s an update from Charl del Rio.

‘As we know galgos are used as “renta” dogs not pets! Therefore this gets passed off as Cultura Agriculture department. No-one wants to take responsibility to answer. Due to the welfare of the Spanish galgo and the fact that no other carrera de galgo has been held at the hipodromo in Malaga or any other in this area, they are duty bound to give information regards who placed the race there and if there will be permissions to give further races. They need flooding with emails.’

  • Rey, King of the Galgos – needs your help

Rey Charl 250 3 2012112carlotagalgos is a very small family association which concentrates on rescuing and rehabilitating traumatised, sick and injured galgos and podencos. Some months ago we told the story of Rey, abandoned, surviving on virtually nothing, he’d finally collapsed and almost given up the struggle. Some months on, he is doing ok, but a new problem has arisen. Rey needs help! He needs you, we need you! Here’s his story…

Rey came to 112 Carlota Galgos several months ago, found giving up, life had let him down. He lay in the dust with life draining from him,.. down and out. He was seen and rescued. He stayed with his rescuer in Sevilla for a month and along with Polyana joined us at 112 carlota galgos for us to recouperate them and socialise them into family life.

Rey .. seems he has everything against him, he is a black galgo in Spain, he is older and he is a natural hunter. He cannot be scolded for something which has been bred into him, he lived and kept himself alive by hunting. He is a hunter, he will hunt, and yet he will walk by your side like the gentlest galgo you know.

  • Educating the younger generation – Spanish associations at work.

Charl classroom 2 250 4 2012Educating the younger generations is one of the ways of trying to change the attitude of the spanish towards animal care – that cruelty to animals is not acceptable. Several associations work towards this end, DDEVIDA and Pro-Galgo to name just two. A third one is 112carlotagalgos. You can read more about their visit to a local school on this link. Read the latest news about Greta longnose, a beautiful galga which we fostered for 4 months before she travelled to her forever home.

  • Galgo Rey – from Seville to Malaga to…seeking forever home

Rey Charl 2012 250This is the story of galgo Rey (King of kings), abandoned on the streets of Seville starving, thin and weak, he lay down one day and gave up on life; his galguero no longer valued Rey’s life. For at 7+ years he has surely given his best to his master. Bred from, run and hunted, he was probably the prime galgo of the group and caught the most hares. To get to his age is a credit to his survival.

He’s got two disadvantages – he’s all black and he’s male. What is it about black galgos, that people turn away; when their coat recovers in good condition, they are stunning!

  • Seville to Malaga, walking the streets of Spain

Polyana%20rescue 190Here’s the story of yet another abandoned galgo; it’s typical of the hundreds across Spain, now dumped and abandoned by the hunters to whatever fate befalls them – the hunters have no mercy, they don’t care.

Polyana – a brindle galga walking the streets in Sevilla, lost and alone.
Thrown out as trash and unwanted purpose with a story to tell of being a galga in Spain. Beaten down and feeling low, she wanders and begs, sneaking food where she can. Empty bins may have spilt a crumb, gravel on the floor may just have a grain, its not much to keep going but it could ease the pain.

  • Galgo Rey (the King) – Malaga now, have you room for me in your heart?

Rey Charl bank 2 2012 250The nights are cold and the days are long
and the shivering I feel is all day long.
I ache inside and cry in pain
for the hunger inside just reigns and reigns.

    Life alone means no abuse,
something thats shows on my skin that’s loose.
I wear the trail of disgrace and pain,
and all along with nothing to gain.

  • Malaga – walking the streets in Protest

Malaga protest group 1 250 2 2012Traffic in Malaga was today brought to a standstill when animal lovers in Andalucia took to the streets to protest about animal cruelty in Spain and in particular the plight of the galgos at the hands of the hunters. It’s at this time of year that the galgueros get rid of their dogs – upwards of 50,000 every year. The protestors wore black, many of the dogs wore black collars and scarves. Well done, everyone.
