  • Educating the younger generation – Spanish associations at work.

    Charl classroom 2 250 4 2012Educating the younger generations is one of the ways of trying to change the attitude of the spanish towards animal care – that cruelty to animals is not acceptable. Several associations work towards this end, DDEVIDA and Pro-Galgo to name just two. A third one is 112carlotagalgos. You can read more about their visit to a local school on this link.   • Galgo Rey – from Seville to Malaga to…seeking forever home

    Rey Charl 2012 250This is the story of galgo Rey (King of kings), abandoned on the streets of Seville starving, thin and weak, he lay down one day and gave up on life; his galguero no longer valued Rey’s life. For at 7+ years he has surely given his best to his master. Bred from, run and hunted, he was probably the prime galgo of the group and caught the most hares. To get to his age is a credit to his survival.

    He’s got two disadvantages – he’s all black and he’s male. What is it about black galgos, that people turn away; when their coat recovers in good condition, they are stunning!

    I thought you might be interested to read this piece by Oscar van Gastel which he has posted on Animal Welfare Support Murcia on facebook. Although it refers to bull fighting, it could also apply to all animals used in fiestas, plus the Spanish hunting dogs.

Please copy and paste the letter into a word document and post. This link takes you to the list of addresses for the recipients – the national government – Prime Minister, Ministers of Tourism, Environment, Sport, Interior, all in Madrid, Andalucia, Murcia, Extremadura, Castilla la Mancha, Castilla y Leon, Balearics, Canary Islands, Valencia, Basque. The relevant addresses are highlighted in bold. You’ll need 15 copies of the letter if you write to them all. I’m beginning to get replies to my letters, so someone is reading them!   • Malaga, podenca Ana needs your help

    Ana 3 Charl 250 1 2012This is an appeal for help for vet fees and food for Ana, a podenca Andaluz abandoned, injured and with pups near Valencia. She was eventually rescued, after more than 2 months of gaining her trust, and is now with 112carlotagalgos being repaired, healed and prepared for her forever home. Read her story here. Remember, podencos suffer just as much as galgos at the hands of the galgueros.

    ‘A Galgo (Greyhound) was left tied up outside Pepis Refugio – The dogs were barking as normal but Alan and Jane knew the different barks and this meant a new arrival. Alan walked down to the gate with a small torch only to see two green glows at the gate; yes it was Marko (his new name).
