The magic of a Spanish Galgo
This is taken from a page about the greyhound but it also applies to the Spanish greyhound.
They might be tall, lean, and built for the speed of the wind, but their spirits are as gentle as a summer breeze. Greyhounds prove that angels come in elegant, leggy packages, often found curled up on a soft sofa instead of racing across the sky.
Their long, stilt-like legs carry a heart of immense kindness, and those deep, soulful eyes can heal the roughest days in an instant. We are incredibly lucky to be chosen by these graceful, affectionate companions who demand nothing but a warm spot to nap and a gentle hand. (more…)

Even on Sundays, the rescue centre never rests. When the phone rings, we often already know what time it is. Once again, a call for help. A small galgo girl… no longer wanted. Discarded. Thanked for her work, then cast aside as if she no longer had any worth.
Our GRA van left immediately, as it so often does, heading to the agreed location. There she stood. Small and unsure. Her eyes said it all: she had had enough. Years of obedience, running until her body could no longer cope, enduring humiliations she never deserved. And yet, when we approached her gently, her tail gave a tiny wag. A spark of trust… despite everything. For this little girl, a new adventure begins today. (more…)

Galgo Project EU – information needed on the numbers of dogs in shelters
Galgo Project EU is a Dutch organisation dedicated to supporting, rescuing, and giving a voice to galgos and podencos. They work closely with Spanish shelters, help dogs find safe homes, and raise awareness about the structural mistreatment these dogs still suffer.
With Galgo Project EU, we’re gathering data, testimonies, and concrete evidence to build a detailed dossier for the European Parliament. Our goal is clear:
To hold Spain accountable for not applying Article 13 of the Lisbon Treaty, and to push for equal, EU-wide protection of all dogs, including galgos and podencos, without exceptions. (more…)

As many of you already know, there is an attempt to exclude hunting and working dogs from the Royal Decree on animal facilities (núcleos zoológicos) — their last chance to be protected. These dogs would be left even more unprotected under a decree issued by the Ministry of Agriculture, which would only require registration, identification, and little else. Reporting the poor conditions of hunting packs (rehalas) would become even more difficult. (more…)

‘Hello everybody, we’ve just been made aware of this case, it is a galga that is abandoned and lives lives badly in a house in ruins. For now we have food and water, but it would be necessary to find a foster home where she can recover little by little. She has a noble character, friendly and confident, not scared or running from people. QuiQue and Risa – have you a special place in your home?
We regularly have galgos and podencos to stay overnight at our home in France, en route from Spain to their foster and forever homes. I love them all, but once in a while there is a special one. My husband took to this handsome chap on the rescue last weekend (19/03/2011). This is QuiQue, a magnificent rough-haired galgo, full of life and just craving for his forever home. Sadly we couldn’t even foster him as Floyd, our French lurcher, doesn’t like other large male dogs. QuiQue had been in a refuge for a year, if you can offer him a forever home, contact L’Europe des Levriers.
And don’t forget my foster galga Risa, also looking for her forever home. -
Starving, injured, escapee from hanging……the horror continues
Every day more horror stories come in from Spain, abandoned, injured and starving galgos – and the hunters still deny it goes on! Three appeals for help, if anyone can squeeze any of these dogs into a shelter or foster home, please contact the people direct.
