  • La Bienvenida, Ciudad Real – Stunning Galgo Hairo seeks forever home

La Bienvenida Hairo 2 400My very first galga Karmel was from La Bienvenida refuge in Ciudad Real, 200km south of Madrid.  I travelled down with the team of L’Europe des Levriers to collect her, along with a dozen more.  I wrote about the trip for the Weekly Telegraph and that was also the birth of Galgo News.

This stunning boy is at La Bienvenida now.  He’s Hairo, he was skeletal when rescued but is now looking much better.  Here is his story.

Hairo arrivedon 30th Junhe at the shelter, it’s another waste more of the hunt among many so many. What can we say about him or his state that you can’t see in the video?
Needless to say, he’s too thin, you can see the spine and all the ribs, he looks like a sack of bones.  He was full of ticks and very dirty, has some wounds but they are not serious. He soon had a nice bath and stayed on good and clean. The poor boy very much appreciated the attention and filled us with kisses. In spite of his state, is a young galgo,  very affectionate and happy.  He just wanted to eat and lots of cuddling.

  • Scooby takes 50 Galgos & podencos from Castilla La Mancha…

Scooby 50 Castilla la Mancha 1 2016 250From Fermin Perez Martin, president of Scooby refuge.

‘In a few weeks the hunting season with galgos will come to an end and that means that now already shelters and perreras are completely full with galgos, discarded by their owner who just considers them a bad working tool and nothing more…

Scooby will take the next couple weeks hundreds of galgos and podencos in to save them from being killed in a perrera or waiting for years and years in shelters because nobody adopts them.

  • Protesting against killing – sometimes we CAN make a difference

Scooby fugitive galgos 250 12 2015A moving story of canine family love from Cobie at Scooby Residencia Valladolid.

‘This article appeared last week (12 2015) in the Spanish newspaper El Mundo and it´s about the 2 abandoned galgos from Langa (Avila) for which the mayor of that village gave permission to shoot them. It´s beautiful written and very emotional, to translate it is very hard because it´s very big. But in short it comes to this:

The black and white galga you see in this picture which was taken the 25th of November 2012, is already roaming around for 3 years. After one and a half years she got company from an also abandoned male. People in that village know who they belonged to but they didn´t like to talk about that. Together they are like Bonny and Clyde because in the night they come down from the mountain where they live, to catch a chicken, not because they are agressive, no, just to survive and aparently the people there like more their chickens than abandoned galgos so they have chased them many times away or even gone up on `their` mountain to try to kill the galgos.

  • Christmas for a galgo

Seville perrera galgo 250 4 12 2015Yet another heartless bastard galguero…this poor galgo being dragged by its owner in Seville perrera, peeing on the floor the entire way, so scared. What did you do to displease your owner poor Galgo? Maybe you did nothing wrong but there is just no room for you anymore. You are innocent, you are loyal but it does not matter.

While we rightfully focus on the horrid cases of abuse and abandonment that fill the pages on the internet and their rescue, especially at this time of year, sadly the stark reality is that the vast, vast majority of Galgos and Podencos find this as their final fate. If they are not taken care of by the hand of their owner they will be dropped off, or in this case dragged, in to a perrera where most will find the needle as the final reward for their innocence.

The tip of the iceberg that we all see is tragically overwhelmed by the realities of the part underneath the surface.

  • Why have a dog?

Galgo Post 250 1 15 11 2015Can you imagine the bad luck this poor boy has had in his 2 year life?! Angie Robinson tells his story.

‘This is POST. We’ve seen him before in the Valencia perrera municipal….. He was found wandering last year and picked up by the dog catchers, and then later retrieved by the owner. He was found again, last week, wandering alone with a broken chain still around his neck where he had broken free. We understand that he was kept on a plot of land chained up, living outside. This time, the owner has signed him over with permission to sacrifice. POST is CESE – this means that when a kill list is drawn up, the CESE dogs that are entered by owner will be at the top of the sacrifice list.

  • Galga Kira – victim of a hit and run – please help with the vet bill

Lynn galga 5 250This is a story which could happen to any of us. Lynn Pauloudros does a lot of work helping galgos and podencos from her home in France. She now finds herself – through no fault of her own nor that of her galga – with a huge vet bill. She is running an auction on facebook to raise funds to pay for the treatment for her galga, but I am appealing here for help for her too. Please, if you can help, donate to her here.

Lynn explains. ‘I rescued Kira from Olivenza perrera, she is about 7-8 years old. She had to be operated on when I got her in 2014 because she had been shot with a shotgun and the wound never healed. There was a pocked of pus under her muscles and half her tail had to be amputated. She also only has 3 toes on a front foot.

  • IMPORTANT WARNING: ALL SHELTERS WITH HUNTING DOGS/GALGOS/PODENCOS, ETC.

    Morocco%20Track%20Kennels 200Please share this warning.

We’ve been asked to put the following message on our Page with this warning:

“With this message I want to alert you that there are currently serious efforts to recruit hunting and greyhounds from shelters, rescue organizations, foundations and associations, for use in hunting in Morocco.

Thus, our animals rescued from hell in Spain end up in the same hell in Morocco.

Would you please distribute this far and wide within your ranks, so that each one can be alert to and avoid this happening to their rescued hunting dogs?

    Thank you very much.’

  • Are galgos carriage hounds?

Carriage training galgos 3 190The Junta in Andalucia had no regard for the health and well being of galgos when they rescinded the law banning hounds being trained from motorised vehicles – whether vans, 4×4, quad bikes, motorbike. This ignoramus would have got round the ban anyway…can you believe this?!! How close are those galgos to the carriage wheels! They don’t stand a chance if he puts the horse into trot!!! I’d like to rope him to the back of that cart….seen in the area of Pepis Dog Refuge, Pedrera, Seville!

You may just be able to see there are 3 dogs – the chain of the white one in the middle is going over the carriages leaf springs, and the only way for that poor dog to get on the inside again is to get right beside that carriage wheel!

  • Valladolid perrera – Scooby to the rescue

    Scooby 250 3 25 8 2015From Cobie at Scooby Residencia Valladolid.

Meet puppy Joseph jr. rescued 25/8/2015 from the perrera in Valladolid by Scooby. Was he born with this or has he had 2 broken front legs without them being treated? Or maybe he was taken too soon from his mother, as usually, and is this because of malnutrition? We don´t know yet but if it can be fixed, Scooby will fix it and if not, we will find him a goodhearted family who is not looking for a `perfect`galgo but for one who needs a loving family because the heart is all that matters most!

We took 2 other galgos at the same time.
