• Protectora de Scooby – always there for the hounds

From Scooby – they are always there for the galgos.

‘We keep rescuing galgos and unfortunately not everyone comes to the shelter in good condition.
This handsome boy must have been hit by a vehicle and he has a broken leg, so soon he will be operated on.
It’s the third surgery we have to face in just a month, and the expenses outnumber us.
Please, we need your help to keep saving and changing lives.

  • The Healthy Hound Quarterly – studying Galgos

In this issue of The Healthy Hound Quarterly you’ll notice a fair amount of content about Galgos (Spanish Greyhounds). They did this for a couple of reasons, partly because there is an increasing number of galgos adopted in the US and they have their own unique characteristics that both veterinarians and adopters need to be aware of. Dr Guillermo Couto and his team of Ohio State University have written a couple of interesting articles on their studies.

  • Change your life – adopt a greyhound or galgo

    Janet Brinegar Lukas photo 400
A lovely rehoming story from Janet Brinegar.

HOW I MET LUKA AND HOW HE CHANGED MY LIFE

I had been interested, OK, obsessed with retired racing greyhounds for over 20 years but the time was never right to bring one into my life. About 11 years ago I noticed that the greyhounds were going to be at a local Petco store doing meet and greets from Thanksgiving to Christmas. It was right across from my Mom’s favorite restaurant.

After lunch we went over to the store to see the hounds. When I told the meet and greet rep that I had always wanted a greyhound she asked why haven’t I sent in my adoption application. My Mom was the sticking point. I had a very lively wired haired fox terrier at home along with two parrots. Everyone had to get along. I had never had two dogs at the same time before. The rep suggested I bring my fox terrier Scout in to see how he got along with the hounds. A week later I did just that and found that Scout was not afraid of them or overly interested in them. This could work.

  • Spanish galgueros STILL hang their dogs!

The galgueros continue to claim they don’t hang dogs. This is in Rociana recently!

‘Although we always see these scenes on Facebook and in the news, we never hope to find it. This is the reality for the galgos.

This is what I had to find in the field when I went out with my dogs for a walk. A very young galga which has been hung and thrown there in the middle of the field, nor have they even had the delicacy of having buried her after her horrendous death. I only wish you galguero…. son of the great whore – that you have the same death that she has had, slow and painful. You stayed next to her while she was hanging and fighting for her life, and when she ran out of strength and without oxygen you cut the rope to throw her there in the middle of the field. What kind of person is able to do that….

Hopefully we’ll find out who did this, we won’t stop investigating. Please… If anyone knows to whom this galguit belonged or has any clue of who did this, contact us in a totally anonymous way. We will never reveal the name of those who give us clues or data that make us reach who did this. She had no chip.
