  • The dirty truth about top-selling dog foods

From The Whole Dog Journal by their Editor.

The dirty truth about how top-selling dog foods could actually be harming your dog’s health!
And other untold secrets you need to know.

    Dear Fellow Dog Lover,

You want the best for your dog – especially when it comes to his food. You read labels and try to choose the brand and formula that will nourish your furry friend.

That’s why you’ll be as shocked as I was, to discover that dozens of today’s top-selling brands – names you thought you could trust, like Beneful, Pedigree, Purina and more – may not contain the wholesome, healthy ingredients you want for your dog.

  • Levriers sans Frontieres – the difficulty in homing galgos

In 2007  I joined a French galgo and podenco rescue association, L’Europe des Levriers and travelled with them over several years on rescues into Spain to bring  hounds back to France for rehoming.  from about 2010 some members of the team broke away and formed their own rescue associations in other parts of France.  And this has continued, so many rescue associations bringing galgos and podencos into France that it is becoming more and more difficult to home them.

Here Odile Brochet, President of Levriers sans Frontieres, expresses her opinion.  This is an English translation, kindly supplied from Danielle Hart, who bravely translated my galgo and podenco books into French.

Basically, she’s saying that she’s tired of all the people screaming that they should save a galgo whenever she has a sad story about one, especially a traumatized one. That people say LSF HAS to get them out of there, but once they’re in France in a foster family, everybody forgets about them. People only seem to want beautiful galgos who don’t have problems, but they expect LSF do get the traumatized ones out of the Spanish shelters though. She says that the broken ones, the ones who have been in shelters for months if not years surely deserve to be saved the most, but at the rate it’s going if people don’t adopt them, LSF will have to leave them in the shelters.

  • What your dog really thinks about you

I am your dog, and I have a little something I’d like to whisper in your ear; I know that you humans lead busy lives. Some have to work, some have children to raise. It always seems like you are running here and there, often much too fast, often never noticing the truly grand things in life.

Look down at me now, while you sit there at your computer. See the way my dark brown eyes look at yours? They are slightly cloudy now. That comes with age. The grey hairs are beginning to ring my soft muzzle. You smile at me; I see love in your eyes. What do you see in mine? Do you see a spirit? A soul inside, who loves you as no other could in the world? A spirit that would forgive all trespasses of prior wrong doing for just a simple moment of your time?

  • Scooby Medina and Scooby Valladolid – saving galgos and podencos

So how many galgos and podencos did the Scooby team in January and February 2016?  Cobie at Valladolid has been counting.

Maybe you read the news on the Scooby blog or maybe you don´t, but the histories about the trips Scooby makes to save galgos is every time a different one, it´s not that we repeat the same rescues every time. Therefore I put them here again and it’s from January until 23 February, so the rescues from December and before are not included:

  • Spanish TV publicises the abandonment of galgos

Translation of the piece on Madrid television about the abandonment of and cruelty to galgos.

‘Abandoned, abused, malnourished… So are many greyhounds when hunting season, now in February.  So protective of animals denounce it as Animal Rescue who see real atrocities committed with these dogs.  Some come with obvious signs of abuse and have even had cases of galgos who had started the chip of rennet to avoid being identified.

Between February and June, almost 30% of dogs that are collected in the community of Madrid are galgos.’

If you want to adopt or sponsor one of them, visit the Association’s website: www.animalrescuespain.com
