  • Galga Betsy looking for a foster/adoption home in Barcelona

    Galgos 112 Betsy mouth 400 9 2022
A galga in a sorry state now safe with Galgos 112.

This is Betsy. She arrived at Galgos 112 in such bad conditions that she was directly admitted to the veterinary clinic. Betsy had a fever and passed out. Had a severe eye infection, was very thin and had anaemia. She was also tested for the usual diseases. The vet calculated her about 10 years but it’s a guess. She has virtually no teeth and without them it’s almost impossible to get her age right.

We have got two news about her: one good and one bad.

The good news is that she is recovering well and still on medication and has been discharged!.

The bad thing is that we don’t have a foster home for her so we’ve had to rehome her and even though they are well cared for there, it’s not the same as being in a home, especially for a gal like Betsy who is already of a respectable age. And we would also like that, because of her eye problem, they could also see her at IVO in Barcelona.

So people of Barcelona and vicinity we need you! Betsy needs you guys!

  • Scooby Residencia Valladolid – blind galgo Balu in recovery

    Scooby Balu 1 400 8 2022
From Cobie at Scooby Residencia Valladolid.

‘This very sweet galgo is blind and if that isn’t already bad enough, now he also has a bloodear/othematome in both ears! He has been operated on this rather painful issue in the Scooby hospital in Santovenia. He (Balu) has undergone the operation as a real hero! He does not like too much the Isabellina cap but what needs to be has to be and hopefully it won’t be needed very long. Well done to the vets and to our special blind boy Balu.’

Eventually Balu will be looking for a very special home, preferably with another dog.

We have a blind podenco and his housemate wears a bell on her collar. He is amazing the way he finds his way around using his nose and hearing.

  • Galga Molly in the UK hoping for a forever home

Back in 1994 a stray greyhound turned up at our Suffolk home, in poor condition. From the tattoo in her ear, she was 7 years old but couldn’t trace the owner. She converted me to greyhounds and subsequently to galgos. This stunning black galga is in the UK for homing.

‘Our beautiful galga Molly is looking for forever home. She is currently in a foster home in Staffordshire and doing really well.
Molly is a friendly, happy girl, she in a home with several dogs, various breeds and gets on with them fine. There are no issues with people either. She just over 2 years old.

Sadly can’t live with cats but could live with older sensible children. She is spayed, vaccinated, chipped, blood tested and health checked.

    From Sandy Galgoslover

    ’12 9 2022

Busy morning, 5 dogs had an appointment at the vet. Huge vet expenses for a small rescue – if you can donate, please click on this weblink.

    – Sofia: this girl has made a huge step forward, her weight increased from 16kg to 20.60kg. Her treatment for Erlichia and Anaplasma has ended and the 28 days of Milteforan have also been completed. Today a new blood test was done to check if she also has Babesia.

    – Cabriola: she too has already made enormous progress. Checkup was ok, a blood test was also done for Babesia. She has also ended her treatment for Erlichia and Anaplasma.

    – Violetta: meanwhile has gained enough weight (25kg), finished her treatment for Anaplasma and is being spayed today (she tested negative for Babesia).

    – Fiona: also ended her treatment for Anaplasma but unfortunately tested positive for Babesia. To avoid risks of internal bleeding she will only be sterilized after her treatment. She received step one of her treatment today and will remain in the clinic for observation until this evening.

And last but not least our crazy Pod

  • The Daphne Legacy Tour – in memory of Galga Daphne

Since the beginning of my involvement with the plight of the Galgo and Podenco back in 2007, I have watched the explosion of rescue associations – especially since the advent of Facebook in 2011 – which has been a positive in the struggle to deal with the treatment and abandonment of the hounds every year by the Galgueros. Many of these fabulous hounds now travel long journey across the Atlantic to forever homes in America and Canada.

Recently one of the US homing associations visited SOS Galgos to take back some hounds lucky enough to be offered forever homes. Here’s what happened.

‘We wish to give a huge heartfelt thank you to Captain Kate for having come to visit the SOS Galgos Rescue & Education Center in Barcelona and an equally huge heartfelt thanks to Founder of the Daphne Legacy Tour, Christina Azharian, for making it all come together. Much needed awareness has been raised about the plight of these gentle but resilient survivors, the Galgos, who are used and abused by Spanish hunters (galgueros) for hare coursing from September to February, year after year. Only awareness will make change. More education means less rescue. Thank you’

The Daphne Legacy Tour is a transport organization, bringing Galgos to the USA from Spain to be adopted through Greyhound adoption groups.
