I receive a lot of stories and photos of what happens to galgos when the heartless galgueros abandon them. It all upsets and ANGERS me, but this one made me weep buckets of tears. Just so much I could hardly see to write.
This is what the shelter says.
This is Mora, another victim, just 2 years old …
We found her on the shoulder of a motorway, unable to move, she’d been there for some days because she was malnourished and dehydrated.
The little galga has a broken leg, very broken, specifically, the tibia and fibula. In addition, the wound is open and is very infected, which is the biggest problem. Until the infection is removed, she cannot be operated on, and she needs to be operated on.
In addition to being abandoned and injured in this state, she has pneumonia, fever, runny nose and strong conjunctivitis, skin allergy …. now she’s hospitalized and her condition is very serious, is a pile of bones … so far the only thing you can do is keep her alive, she needs surgery soon, as soon as she is strong to withstand anesthesia and to heal the open wound infection have in the leg.
We need donations for hospitalization, surgery and treatment of Mora, she has clung to life and we must help …. you can see more pictures of her in www.arcasevilla.es:

Now there is more bad news …. Still she is hospitalized because she not even move, she poops and pees where she is and does not attempt to rise to this situation … the vet has done more x-rays and Mora, in addition to the fracture of the leg has another problem which means she cannot get up …
On the plus side, is recovering from pneumonia and conjunctivitis but the pain she must be going through is indescribable and she has to be totally immobilized and on medication.
Mora needs surgery and not just for a broken leg but also to put a plate in the neck. If this is not done, she may not be able to walk again. Both the operation and the rehabilitation is very hard, but Mora is very young and really wants to fight to live.
The operation needs to be as soon as possible because Mora is suffering and ARCA Sevilla can not afford the CAT scan which will be around € 800 (single leg fracture was 500 €) … and the association needs financial support to operate.
Please donate to the association via the website, or Banco Santander: 0049-1861-11-2210235578 Concept: Mora

NB There are so many galgos abandoned who are not injured to such an extent as Mora, and maybe some people will say ‘the kindest thing is to put her down – like my husband said. Spend the money for vets fees for Mora on saving and rehoming galgos who are not so badly injured’.
I have had the privilege of seeing a galga who had been exceedingly badly injured by being dragged behind a moving vehicle. The recovery she made, as a result of the volunteers who picked her up off the road, (just as this galga had been left like trash at the side of the road,) the fosterers who gave her medication and treated her wounds, and the adoptants who took her for physiotherapy and swimming proves to me what an amazing inner strength for survival these dogs have.
SO, I appeal on behalf of Mora – and she looks just so much like my galga Sahara……….
More tears!

Thank goodness you saved her and how many people just drove past and did nothing???? Disgusting!
I will post this story around and help get donations but as you know we are all fighting for our own refuges and galgos. I know how you feel tho, its easy to say put them down its kinder but when you get to know them and their little tails wag when they see you, you see hope in their eyes and you cant let them down. Good luck!
I have posted this link to all the forums I know of for expats here in Spain. Good luck!

Today she was so much happier. Her tail was up and she was delighted to see me. Still timid tho and nervous but I can see with the right treatment she will be a great companion. Before I left i snuck a peek at her without her seeing me and she was laying on the wooden bed with her legs crossed and looking really relaxed so all is heading in the right direction with her. Thank goodness. Ive had no luck with the organisations i have contacted so its all fingers crossed for Germany. Thanks for asking!!
Hi Tina
Its what people sometimes say to me – well, why spend money donating to badly injured galgos when there are perfectly healthy ones needing help to. What can I say to them, other than that my own feeling is that every galgo deserves a chance, if they show the slightest sign of fighting for life, and most of them do.
You know that, and you are at the blunt end, so to speak.
Any news on any of your galgos moving out?
Yet more are being brought to France this weekend, with another association – how many more can France take.
The hunting federation has to deal with the problem, as well as Seprona and the government. It is the hunters who cause the problem. No other country has hunters who discard their dogs like the galgueros do.
Lets hope the blind galga is only temporarily handicapped.
Like you, I wish I could bring them all home.

Yesterday Brunita and Azabache were castrated and head out to Switzerland soon but Azabache is losing weight everyday, she can nearly fit through the cage bars she is so thin. I hope she will be ok. Its all heartbreaking. I dont stop thinking about it.

Bonjour
She will be ok, Tina. You know what inner strength
these galgos have. They need it to survive the maltreatment most of them
suffer at the hands of the hunters and gitanos. In a home environment, she
will learn to relax and be calm and her weight will improve.
Some of the galgoswe have brought out of
Spain with EDL are badlytraumatised and skinny, it is hard to imagine them
ever recovering. But they do, never completely mentally, but they become
happy companion dogs, and their health improves. My Carmela had serious
mental problems – one year on and she still will not go into the house if
someone is standing near the door, and she cant see a clear run to bolt in to
the other dogs. But she overcame her other fears, eventually calmed down,
put on weight, and is a beauty.
You know these poor dogs cope with so much in their
short lives, moving from hunters to abandonment to shelters to transport to
another country, to hearing another language. In between this they are
castrated and vaccinated etc. And they still come out the other side,
happy dogs.
Worry not, Azbache will be travelling with her pal
Brunita, that will be comfort for her on the journey. She has already
survived the worst of life at the hands of the hunter who abandoned her.
Remember that they have survived, been saved and think of the good lives now
ahead of them. You helped them achieve that.
