Last Sunday, two tiny galgo puppies arrived at the rescue center. Only six to seven weeks old… far too young to already face the harsh reality of this world. At that moment, we could not share much information yet, because there were still other dogs in danger. Their safety had to come first before the truth could be revealed.
But deep down, we already knew that terrible things were happening in the backstreets of Vera (a large commercial town near the coast in Almeria) — things no one should ever have to witness. Places where innocent animals are born into pure misery. Where a mother tries to raise her puppies surrounded by fear, filth, hunger, and abuse. It breaks your heart over and over again. (more…)

We start the day with some wonderful news from yesterday. In the afternoon, two volunteers set off towards El Ejido to pick up two galgos. For months, Carmen has been working hard to bring a galgo mother to safety—she had recently given birth to nine puppies and still had a young son from a previous litter by her side. This is the beautiful galga Dani with Protectora Scooby who is hoping for her forever home. If you have room in your home and heart for her, contact Scooby direct.
Her photo really pulled at my heart strings as she is the twin of one of my galgas, Carmela, who I adopted after she had spent 4 years at the hands of a hunter who maltreated her. It took over 2 years of her living with my galga gang before she was anything like a ‘normal’ dog. Very much loved and remember.

Yet another sad example of the horrors endured by Spain’s hunting dogs because there is no law to protect them.
The 6 month old puppies arrived from Alentejo this week. They were brought to Tiny Shelter by the very kind Municipal vet of Alentejo, herself. They are lovely dogs and clearly so excited to be in a new place …away from the CHAOTIC AWFUL PLACE where they lived…
All have small cuts and sores, proof that they had to fight for food , but apart from that, they are lovely ,happy, GRATEFUL puppies, excitedly smelling and investigating everything. He immediately vaccinated them , gave them very good puppy food and toys. These are some of the lucky ones, already removed … close to 20 have been removed…there are 50 left! (more…)
