A Passion for Giving to Galgos

Passion levriersThis is a tale about Little Red Riding Hood and the wolf, le Petit Chaperon Rouge.

Virginie Labat, of Passion Levriers tells the tale:

Little red riding hood is Passion Levriers, the wolf is the galguerro in Spain, this story represents what we do to help the refugees there in Spain. We collect everywhere in France: blankets, medicine, toys for cats and dogs, kennels, food, in fact everything you can use in a refuge for the ‘peludos’ (means in English : the one with hairs).

We have a lot of contacts everywhere in Spain and when someone comes to Irun (the border) we distribute to everyone what they need most. It is quite complicated to explain but for example: from January (when we began this arrangement), we have given more than 50 m3 of things for the refuges.

A friend of mine from the very south of Spain comes every month with a lorry. She collects the adopted dogs along the route and drives to our border (Irun). She stops overnight at my home and then returns with a full lorry of things she can give to refuges in Spain.

Passion levriers twoThis story of Le Petit Chaperon Rouge is very important to us. We even have English people who send us things to give to Spain, it is like a chain (and I want to thank my dear friends in England Annette Pemberton and Anne Peter because they do a lot to help us).

This is not the only thing we do for refuges.

For example, we put all the refuges in contact with each other when they have a big problem and we know someone in Spain (in another refuge) who can help.

We send an email saying ‘ok, this volunteer can help you, I give you his email’. As we work with volunteers in Ibiza too for the Ibizan hounds, we always need volunteers to help us in Spain to take the hounds waiting for the next rescue, so we contact all our friends for help; ‘can you take care of this Ibizan please until we can rescue him? They always answer ‘no trouble, we will do it.’

It is more than collaboration, it is a big family.

All the volunteers are like our relatives, I receive them at home whenever they need it. If they need a specific medicine for a dog, a hound, a cat, they call us; and we try to find it even if we have to pay for it (even if the dog will never be adopted with Passion Levriers).

Our goal is to help everybody, the animals and the volunteers.

I have not been in animal rescue very long, but I am very proud to know all the volunteers : Spanish and French and English and Germans and Americans too, because we collaborate with GRIN USA to enable galgos to be adopted there, in the USA.
