A Victim of Dog Fighting – now safely rehomed in Belgium

Sol injuredAmour des Galgos ASBL is a new association formed this year in Belgium, working with Amigos de los Galgos and the Pedro Munoz refuge in Cuidad Real.

One of their recent arrivals was Sol. He was a victim of fighting dogs – illegal in Spain. It’s common knowledge that galgos are used as bait in dog fights, as aggression is not in their nature and they don’t know how to defend themselves.

Luckily Sol was saved and treated for his wounds, and is now safely rehomed in Belgium. He was not the first galgo they brought out. Their first trip was in April.

Jacques and Patrick were in charge of the lorry, heading for the French/Spanish border, where they were to meet up with 12 galgos at the rendezvous at Biriatou, and take them back to Belgium and a new life free from cruelty and starvation.

Sol injuredNuria Blanca from Amigos de los Galgos, her husband Gonzalo, Loli from the Pedro Munoz refuge and Ivan arrived with the 12 dogs, all beautiful, fully vaccinated, microchipped and castrated.

Whilst they took all the dogs for a walk, Jacques and Patrick prepared the dog cages in the lorry, one for each dog with a comfy duvet to lie on. The dogs were all very calm and, when loaded, they all headed back to Belgium.

The load arrived back at their destination at 8 o’clock on the morning of 6th April, where the rest of the Belgian team were waiting, along with Dr Trassaert, their vet, to check the dogs over, and their paperwork, after their epic journey. Once out of their cages, they were all fed and water, and walked for their toilet.

The first eager adoptants arrived to adopt Cami, it was an emotional moment for the whole team – their first galgo adoption. Each galgo leaves with a new collar, identification tag, strong lead, and a waterproof coat for protection from the wet weather.
