Update on Karmel 17/11
Karmel has been on 1 Megasolene tablet per day for the past couple of months, and this has kept the Pemphigus Foliaceous symptoms from reappearing. Her hair is slowly growing back where she previously suffered hair loss from the pistules, and with a daily spray of Humiderm, her skin is less dry. In herself she is a normal happy galga.
Yesterday she had another trip to the vet, for more tablets and to give a blood sample.
The vet is concerned that, having been on Megasolene since April when the disease manifested itself as a suspected auto-immune problem, Karmel’s liver will now be affected by the medication.
My vet telephoned with the results of the blood test which show that Karmel’s kidneys are not affected by the medication atall. One of the 2 tests on her liver shows a an acceptable reading, but the other test shows her liver is affected. At the moment I am awaiting receipt of the analysis in the post, so I can’t give the percentages.
We have decided to reduce the Megasolene dosage to 3/4 of a tablet per day and, assuming that the disease does not start to manifest itself again, we will return to the vet in a month’s time (just before Christmas) for Karmel to give another blood sample to check what the results are.
Once my vet and I have reached what we believe to be the minimum dose of Megasolene to control the Pf, then I intend to look into the medication which Sarah found so successful for her dog.
