Update on Karmel 22/12/08
Karmel visited the vet again last week, for a 2nd blood sample for analysis. The results of this blood analysis will be compared with the one a month ago, to see what effect, if any, the megasolene medication is having on her liver.
The first analysis on 18th November showed that the medication was not having any side effects in respect of her kidneys. However, there was a slight increase above normal on the alcaline phosphates and amino transfers in her liver.
It was agreed to reduce the daily dosage of megasolene from 1 pill per day to 3/4 pill per day.
The second analysis on 16th December showed that the protein total is completely normal. The amino transfers are now reduced to normal level, but the alcaline phosphates have increased slightly.
Both my vet and I agreed that we cannot reduce the dosage of megasolene below 3/4 pill per day. So we have decided to introduce Imurel Azatioprine, which is the human treatment for pemphisug foliaceous and which does not have any side effects. The idea is that we introduce this medication into Karmel’s system and take have another blood analysis in one month’s time. Depending on the results, we hope to be able to stop the megasolene pills and replace these with Imurel.
So, the current daily medication is 3/4 pill megasolene and 1/2 pill Imurel 50mg.
