Animal Awareness Week 2009 – Sponsored walk for PAWS in Mojacar

World_animal_logoThe first week in October is Animal Awareness Week, as well as World Animal Day. Events were held in 66 countries last year.

PAWS have organised a Sponsored Dog Walk and are looking for as many people as possible to take part, or get sponsorship – 10 euros per person would be a good start. They’ve also got a Fashion Show on 10th October, both events are in Mojacar. For all details, check their website.

    Bonjour
I am so very sad that you feel this way about
Paws. Having visited several refuges in Spain, I know how full they always
are – built to take 30 dogs, they end up with 60 and so on – Scooby has over 600
    – can you imagine looking after that many dogs. And Paws will be the same
    – more dogs than the refuge was built to take. And where does the money
go? Well, veterinary fees for a start, for sick and injured dogs.
Then there is the cost of feeding the dogs – if you know how much it costs to
keep one dog, multiply that by 100 at least. There is bedding always
needed, collars, especially Scalibor against attacks by the sandfly in summer –
in France here they are 18 euros each for the large size – multiply that by 100
    dogs.
And the people at PAWS? They volunteer their
time, as much as they can, many of them as with the other refuges all have full
    time jobs as well.
I will ask PAWS to reply to you as well, but the
best thing you can do is a) go and work there as a volunteer b) be a foster home
for a sick dog or one there isnt room for in the refuge c) adopt a dog d)
donate for dog food and medicines e) do some fundraising for them or go
and stand outside a supermarket with one of their dogs and collect donations for
    them.
I am very sad you feel like this about them and
also that you are not prepared to put your name to your post.
But please keep reading Galgo News and PLEASE go
along and help PAWS, dont moan about them.

You may find that I have replied to this twice. I am a hands on volunteer/and technophobe! but here goes…..
If the true cost of running PAWS was actually shown then you would really be astonished.
But Volunteers give their time, fuel, telephone calls and other expenses all for free – so the true costs are never known. PAWS has no financial support from the local authorities and running a shelter is a costly business.
I would point out that legally the local authorities have the responsibility for stray animals!!!!!!!!!!! Sometimes its good to knock on their door and remind them!!
    With very few volunteers and
very limited space PAWS actually do a manificent job. PAWS could fill the shelter over and over again each month with the mountain of stray dogs and cats all needing help, but PAWS are a no-kill shelter and with, already, a doubling up of animals in the limited space it has to be a case of one out/one in.
But PAWS will always help, if a person is willing to care for the animal until a home or kennel space can be found. But most people don’t want to do this, they just want PAWS to “take away” their problem.
If you really care about animals, as do the PAWS volunteers come down and offer your help at the shelter; help us to help them; a couple of hours each week does make a difference; and then you will truly be in a position to critise (hopefully constructive critisism).
Come and walk a mile in our shoes!!!

    Hi Janet
Thank you for an even greater explanation than I
could give about the PAWS shelter and what is involved in running it. The
work you and the volunteers do always has my utmost admiration, as it does for
everyone who works to deal with the terrible abandonment of animals in
    Spain.
I just hope that the anonymous commenter has now
had their conscience pricked about their criticism, and will get in touch to
    help PAWS positively.
And I will continue to support you in all your work
in any way I can, on Galgo News.
