  • Galga Tina with heartworm – please donate to her vet treatment

    Mediterrane ziektes - Stichting Perro&Co

    Video of Tina

Heartworm is a life threatening health problem in dogs, if untreated, spread by mosqsuito bites.  Treatment can be for months and means the dog must not move around very much or it stimulates the worm to move around.

Galga Tina at Galgos Rescue Almeria has tested positive for this terrible problem.  Here she is at the vet being examined.

From Sandy at GRA.  Our sweet Tina tested positive for Dirofilaria, heartworm.  Heartworm is a serious and potentially fatal disease if it is not treated properly and closely monitored. Of course, we didn’t waste a single moment.  Tina returned to the veterinarian for a thorough examination. Her heart was carefully checked, and another blood sample was taken. It was examined under a microscope to determine whether any heartworm larvae were still present, allowing her treatment plan to be tailored to her needs.

  • Update on galga Galena with Asociacion Somos Galgos

May be an image of dog and text that says "GALENA"

Galena had a good night. Wound is progressing quite nicely.  If she continues like this, we can operate on her. The traumatologist told us she’s going to have to have a transplant and do reconstruction.  Just touched the gasket and no damage to the jaw.
So far we have 400€ of expenses but we’ve only just begun.
We’ll keep telling you about the evolution of this little one.

  • Galgo Cate with a genital injury = more bills for Asociacion Somos Galgos

May be an image of tick

Today we introduce you to Cate. This cutie is a 4-year-old male and is already sick. We took him to the hospital today because, as you can see, he has a pretty serious genital injury.  For now, they have told us that we need to perform surgeries and give him a lot of medication for the infection and pain. Next week, if he gets better, we will have to operate on him.
Summer is being tough, for them and for us. More bills and no definitive adoption.  You know we do what we can, but between veterinary, residency, and educators expenses, we can’t take on more dogs for now.
    WE CLOSE DOORS UNTIL RECOVERY

  • Starving and injured – rescued and safe with Asociacion Somos Galgos

    Video

    Video

This little girl is Galena. It means “healer” and we chose it so that her name gives her strength. We rescued her with a rescuer knowing she was going to be in very bad condition, but when we saw that what was on her face was not a simple wound but a gunshot… we had to act fast.
We’ve taken her to the emergency room: we’ve been confirmed that the hole in her face is a gunshot, plus she has a huge loss of blood, dehydration, severe malnutrition, a pulmonary enphysema and pneumonia.
For now they can’t operate it because they don’t think it’s past the anesthesia. Let’s start with antibiotics and wound cleanings.
You know how this goes, we are not leaving the little one no way but we need help paying the bills….

  • Ex-racing galga – used, abused, injured – now safe with Galgos Rescue Almeria

    Video

Late week, our van headed to Los Gallardos to pick up a 2-year-old girl. She had been used for competitive racing, but due to injuries to her hind leg, she was no longer considered “useful.”  At the rescue center, she is now finally receiving the rest, care, and time she needs to recover. We will continue to monitor her progress closely and share more updates soon.

  • Fundacion Benjamin Mehnert in Seville – over 400 dogs need help

    Video

WE NEED HELP. NOW MORE THAN EVER.   There are times when a protector doesn’t need applause.  Today we have over 400 animals in our care. Over 400 lives that depend entirely on us to eat, receive veterinary care and have a chance at a future.  Among them are more than 40 animals with complex and serious veterinary treatments. Injured, sick dogs, recovering from surgeries, animals needing daily medication, tests, income and constant care. They are added to our cats and many other cases that require continuous attention.

The reality is we don’t have public aid.  We don’t receive grants to cover this work.  Everything we do, every rescue, every operation, every thoughtbag, every medicine, every life saved, exists because of the people who decide to help us.  Thanks to you guys. (more…)

  • Spain gives 4 million euros for animal shelters and feral cat colonies

If you have spent time in Spanish towns or cities, you have probably seen them. Small groups of cats living around parks, plazas, alleyways, and empty lots. Usually there is a feeding station, sometimes a small shelter, and almost always a local volunteer quietly looking after them.
The funding for local authorities is focused on managing these feral cat colonies in a humane way, as required under Spain’s Animal Welfare Law. This usually means trap-neuter-return programmes, maintaining colony records, and ensuring basic health monitoring.   Trap-neuter-return is the standard humane approach. Cats are captured, sterilised, and returned to their original colonies instead of being removed or culled. Over time, this stabilises populations, reduces disease, and allows cats to live safely in familiar environments with ongoing care.

A good example of how this looks in practice comes from Alhendín in Granada, where the municipality recently opened a “Cat Hotel.” It is a repurposed recycling container adapted to give colony cats shelter from heat, cold, and rain. It is a small project, but it shows how local authorities can adapt creatively when resources exist. (more…)
