It’s almost the end of hunting season with galgos and they are dismissed at a great scale, as always! Almost on a daily bases they are left behind by the galgueros in our Scooby shelter where at least they have a better chance to a dignified life and a better future. Here you see just a few of the ones abandoned the last couple of weeks but there were many more.

  • Sunday 2nd February 2025 – Europe is marching for the Spanish Hunting Dogs

From Platforma NAC (No a la Caza)

[INTERNATIONAL PROTESTS] Europe united against cruelty. 32 European cities will take to the streets to demand an end to dog hunting. All details by city on this weblink.

Thanks to international solidarity, thousands of abandoned hunting dogs in Spain find a second chance.

Hunting with hounds in Spain is a barbaric practice that condemns thousands of animals to a lifetime of suffering and, in many cases, to violent death. It is time to ban this atrocity and ensure the well-being of all sentient beings.

🇪🇸 Spain, wake up! We are the only country in the EU that allows this barbarism.

  • 6 galgos dumped in the middle of the hunting season! Galgos Rescue Almeria to help them

    GRA Extre 1 12 2024 400
    From Sandy Galgoslover.

These 6 galgos are in Extremadura and are being dumped because they are no longer useful for hunting.

For those who aren’t yet aware, this part of Spain is also an area where, as a hunting dog, you prefer not to be.

We were asked if we could take them in. Of course we would! Their transport to GRA costs 420€, which is only a small part of their rescue operation.
Once they arrive at the rescue center, they will receive the necessary care (vaccinations, blood test, deworming, sterilisation/ castration,…. ) needed to prepare them for a new future.

  • Galgo Batur – bad leg fracture and starved – now safe with Galgos Rescue Almeria

    Batur 2 400
Galgos Rescue Almeria received a call to collect this injured galgo.

Our new boy was given a name “Batur”.

Batur is doing well, he’s now mainly enjoying the peace and gets power food twice a day to strengthen his resistance. He’s still quite underweight so that he will have gained some weight by Monday. Monday an appointment is scheduled with the traumatologist and he will most likely be operated immediately.

The medication he’s taking now relieves the pain so that he can relax sufficiently.

  • 6 galgo puppies abandoned – now safe with Galgos Rescue Almeria

    From Sandy Galgoslover

Last week we collected another 6 abandoned puppies from our vet. Unfortunately, there is no trace of the mother. All 6 (5 girls and 1 boy ) got a full check-up, their temperature was taken, they got their first treatment against worms and they were weighed. The weights are hovering around 1.700kg for all of them, while the boy weighs just over 2kg. All are doing fine at the moment, estimated age is 6 weeks.

    Help/support is very welcome.

  • Terra – Galga left injured at the roadside in Cordoba – update

    Terra after op 400
Here’s a positive progress report on the beautiful galga Terra left injured unable to walk. The vet fees are nearly 2,000 euros, please donate and help this small Protectora.

WE HAVE GOOD NEWS! Terra is already peeing by herself. They put her up but she barely supports and since they see her more stable, possibly tomorrow she will go into surgery to fix her hip.

Terra’s veterinary bill now rises to €1,876. Please, any contribution, no matter how small, will be a huge help to us and will allow us to continue saving lives like yours.

We want to sincerely thank all of you who are contributing their grain of sand so Terra can move forward.

She’s a great fighter and, once operated, will need a foster home or, better yet, a family to adopt her. Fresh out of the clinic, she needs to be calm and special care for her recovery.

  • The Fate awaiting British greyhounds sent to China

My passion for greyhounds started back in 1994 when a stray greyhound in poor condition turned up at our Suffolk farmhouse. In those days no one adopted greyhounds. Moving to France I discovered the situation for the Spanish Greyhound (galgos) and started my long fight to publicise their plight and help the rescue associations. So it’s easy to forget that the Greyhound Board of Great Britain (nothing Great about Britain now!) ignores the plight of unwanted greyhounds transported to a life of hell in China! Would you believe they eat greyhounds in China>!

So for a change from galgos, I’m publishing this latest report from Kerry Elliman who originally founded Greyhound Protection UK which developed into Candi Hound Rescue International. She has been rescuing British greyhounds in China for several years and this is her latest report, from 25/11/2024.
