  • Protectora Modepran Valencia – desperate times

All the animal rescue associations are suffering badly with a lack of donations during this recession. Here’s a story from one of them.

‘Animal advocate Modepran makes this announcement

    UNSUSTAINABLE SITUATION

From Modepran we see ourselves in the obligation to release this statement to bring awareness to the situation in which our protector is. We’ve been at the limit for several months, and after the end of summer the situation persists, and we can’t do it anymore.

With an average of between seven and fifteen rescued dogs daily that add to the more than 656 dogs and 370 cats that already live in our shelters, the situation is unsustainable and entails a collapse of the facilities, in addition to the inability to take on the maintenance costs and be careful.

  • Protectora Scooby – summer newsletter – Animal Rescue Transitions To ‘Bureaucrazy’

    Scooby shelter from above 400

    Fermin writes.

As many of you know, the Scooby shelter grew organically from doing the best we could with limited resources and still
making tangible improvements for our rescued animals, nursing them back from the brink to overcome sickness and
adversity to become dogs and cats well enough to go to loving adoption families. Yes we had tragedies but our small team
shared the work and helped the animals to a better life. I still remember a volunteer vet from Scotland, in the twilight of his
career, telling me to welcome volunteer vets but crucially to make sure they had solid experience because in a ‘field’
medical setting, she said we’d need people who were skilled to work with what’s available, rather than the early career medical professionals who would not yet be ready to work in a situation needing ingenuity and technical resourcefulness. I still remember this vet stitching by candlelight when we were blighted with power cuts.

  • Protectora Scooby – summer newsletter – costs of running the shelter

    Scooby shelter from above 400
From Fermin – Scooby Shelter Running Costs: Veterinary

We have a number of running costs to keep the Scooby shelter perational and thought it would be worth focussing on different
internal cost groups to demonstrate how much we rely on your donations and how we spend the money you give us. In this
newsletter we highlight our veterinary costs.

We are fortunate to have our onsite clinic and our own vets. Our vets are salaried and we can present them with most of the medical conditions we come across as well as all of our spays and castrations. Sometimes we have to refer veterinary work to specialists or off-site vets but generally we rely on the skill of our Scooby vets.

  • Protectora Scooby – summer newsletter – A Bad Law

    Scooby logo 400
    A Bad Law

We continue to operate our rescue in the context of the very bad legislative amendment enacted in 2023. A new and very ambitious update to the animal welfare law in Spain was passed in January 2022. The law itself includes training for dog owners, penalties for animal cruelty, prohibition of puppy farming and sales of pets in pet shops. All of this is totally laudable and
necessary. However, the PSOE Party (Spanish Socialist Workers), the senior partner in the coalition government, subsequently proposed an amendment to the law to exclude hunting, working and guarding dogs. The amendment was approved in 2023. Commentators say the PSOE initiated the amendment fearing reactions from rural voters.

  • Protectora Scooby – summer newsletter – news about the damaged Scooby van

    Scooby logo 400
The Scooby summer newsletter is 12 pages long. Sadly they don’t have anyone to put it on the Internet available for me to link you to it. So over the next few weeks I’ll be posting parts of the newsletter here. The first part – there are 9! – is about the Scooby van which suffered front end damage. No photos to post as I can’t save them from the pdf file.

    ‘ The Scooby Van

Our van is back on its wheels! For that we are very grateful to a grant-funding body we contacted to help us make up the shortfall left by the insurance claim. Even though we were not at fault in the accident, the insurance policy paid only part of the cost of the repair.

And it was a big one! In addition to the damaged wing, we needed a new chassis. Our supportive mechanic and owner of our local Iveco garage restored the van to full working order within the most costeffective budget he possibly could.

And when it’s okay, get her a real family. If you want to help Soraya, bizum: 09207 Soraya.

  • Galga Urraca with Galgos Rescue Almeria – help needed with Leishmania treatment

    GRA Urruca nails 1 400
    From Sandy Galgoslover

Meet Urraca, This sweetheart is 4 years old and comes from the Badajoz region. Urraca could no longer satisfy her master so she had to disappear. Luckily she’s safe now.

Upon her arrival at the Rescue Center we noticed that this girl’s nails were terribly long. What we already feared, the blood test confirmed “positive for Leushmania”. In the meantime, we have already started her treatment. Since the level of her leishmania is very high, we were recommended for treatment with injections. This treatment is immediately absorbed into the body.

Glucantime is a very heavy treatment, fortunately for Urraca the disease hasn’t affected her organs so she can endure this treatment without any danger. She’s doing fine at the moment.

  • Galgos Rescue Almeria – Santiago needs a lot of medication for heartworm

    GRA Santiago 400 6 2024
    From Sandy Galgoslover

‘Santiago is in his fourth week of medication treatment against Dirofilaria. The battle is far from over. After the medication cocktail, follow with a Milbemax tablet, then a month later the first injection and back to medication.

This is followed by the second and third injections. The treatment with the injections is very expensive, so any help / support is welcome to give this grandfather the treatment he needs to heal.’
