There are so many terrible tales about galgos and other abandoned dogs in Spain, that I have to limit myself to galgos and podencos. This email has just come in from a lady in Spain who has been a supporter of abandoned dogs for many years. The information in the message illustrates just what a terrible time abandoned galgos have.
‘Dear Everyone, I’m writing to all of you in the hope that you will be able to help me by posting pictures on your websites?
John and I found Holly by the side of the road on Christmas day.
She was unconsious and we weren’t sure if she had been hit by a car. We noticed that it looked as though she may have had puppies recently and so spent some time looking for them. We found nothing. We took her directly to our vets and she was diagnosed as near starvation and exhausted but fortunately no injuries.
We took her home and fed her every two hours twenty four hours a day for the next couple of days. On day three she had a seizure and so back to the vets where it was discovered that she was pregnant. She was so thin it had been impossible to tell. The seizures were from eclampsia a calcium deficiency and so now we had to supplement her food with liquid calcium and continue with the two hourly feeds. None of us expected her to survive with the puppies and we were prepared for her to abhort. But no……..! On the 17th January she started birthing at 4am and finished at 5pm that evening with her ninth!!!!!!!!!!!. Four boys and five girls.
As you can see she is a Spanish Galgo but the pups are mixed, possibly with more than one father. Some look like Galgos and some like Breton Spaniel. So here comes the big plea. I would be so grateful if you could post on your websites that these gorgeous puppies need homes. Obviously no charge. Can you help?
The puppies are all very healthy and have just had their first worming. They will be ready in another two weeks for rehomeing. John and I would be so grateful for any advice and help.
Penelope
PS. We are keeping Holly so its just the puppies who need homes.
Another illustration of the hell of the abandoned bitch galgos is a story from a volunteer who recently visited a perrera, and saw a galgo bitch there, birthing on the soiled concrete floor. If the abandoned bitches come on heat before they are rescued, they will soon be covered by any roaming male dog. There is no hope for these poor bitches, unless they are rescued.
Holly certainly had her guardian angel looking over her when she was saved on Christmas Day.

Blessings upon you for having such compassion for Holly and now her pups. I will be praying that they all find loving homes, as Holly has with you.
