Introducing Estrella. She came out of Spain on the rescue this weekend. This is the picture of her which I posted a few weeks ago, where she was in the Jaen killing station in a cell with 3 galgos.
This is her story so far.
When I enquired of my contacts in Spain if the podenca had been taken out of Jaen with the galgos, I was told she had. The association who organised the rescue of the galgos were also under the impression she had been taken out to a refuge. So we all believed the 4 dogs had been taken out together.
A couple of weeks later I received an email from a contact to say that the podenca was still in the killing station. If you read about killing stations, it’s where people take their dogs, pay a fee of about 30 euros, and leave the dog behind for killing. The dogs are kept two or three weeks, during which time they are not usually fed – why feed a dog you are going to kill?
So a rescue was organised, all the appropriate contacts were made, the podenca was bought out of the killing station and placed in a foster home.
Arrangements were made for her to travel to Madrid to meet up with the other dogs we were to bring out of Spain for rehoming.
And yesterday she travelled to my home in France in the front of the van with me.
She has her full EU passport, which shows some interesting information.
Her full date of birth is noted in 2001, along with her microchip number and the date in 2005 when she was microchipped. From her body, it is clear she has been used as a breeding bitch. She is a sweet little podenca, very affectionate, her tail wags permanently when she walks.
There is a sheet in the passport from the killing station which gives the full name of the hunter and his registration number………….and he took her to the killing station on 19th December last year.
Happy Christmas, Estrella!
So Estrella is now on a special diet, fed small amounts frequently, as she is just a skeleton – starved for 2 weeks or so, she would be.
We just need someone who wants to adopt an older dog, although she is probably good for another 6 or 7 years, where she can spend a lot of time sleeping and eating and going for nice walks in the countryside.
If you can offer her a home, contact L’Europe des Levriers, let’s give Estrella a special present for Easter – a forever home.

Poor little angel. Thank Goodness she is out of that horrible place and on her way to a happy life. What a sweet dog!
Well done, that killing station is just awful, how could anyone leave their dog behind like that knowing he/she is waiting to be killed. She looks a bit snuggly now in her new bed… thank goodness.

We are waiting for the vet to come but she is happy in the refuge. Every now again her tail comes right up and she has a spring in her step then suddenly it goes down again and shes frightened but she just needs time. Shes in a kennel with other dogs including another greyhound, she just wants company, love, food and water. shes beautiful.
Dear Beryl,
The relief I have for her is enormous! The power of the internet… we can and ARE making a difference. Sending you and Estrella many hugs.

Bonjour
Thanks for posting, and thanks for all you
organised at the Jaen end, enabling this sweet little podenca to escape from
hell and into caring arms all the way to my home. Just need to find a
forever home for her now – my galgo and podenco gang are somewhat boisterous for
her!
And thanks for all you do for the abandoned dogs
which find their way into Scooby. I have been pleased to help you get a
foster home for the Cocker Spaniel, en route for his forever home in the
UK.

Hi Beryl,
Is Estrella still looking for a home? Please let me know as we may be able to help her. Thanks for all you do.
Best wishes

Bonjour
Yes, Estrella is looking for a forever home.
She was diagnosed with Ehrlichia at the beginning of January, a very low
reading, but,for whatever reason, treatment was never commenced, even when
she went to her foster home. The only symptom she shows, if one can call
it a symptom, is weight loss, but that could also be due to the fact that they
dont bother to feed the dogs in the killing station. The only reason she
was not killed is because someone had shown an interest in her.She
is now on 28 days treatment of antiobiotics and a vitamin supplement, plus
special canine diet from the vet. She is a delightful happy medium sized
rough haired podenca, used as a breeding bitch but, in comparison to most of the
galgos we bring out, she has not been badly treated, as she is not afraid of
men, her tail permanently wags when she is out for a walk, and she loves walking
the meadow with our big levrier. She will make someone a lovely
companion.
She is 9 years old, microchipped, vaccinated and
spayed. She is available to adopt through LEurope des Levriers.
Youve reminded me to post her in Adopt on
GN.

Hi Beryl,
Thanks for your reply! I have contacted L’Europe des Levriers by email about Estrella (I’m not great on the phone in French so thought that would be easier at first), offering her a home. Hopefully they will get back soon, if not I shall follow up with a phone call.
Thank you again for all you do. I didn’t know anything about the plight of the galgos until a few days ago and it’s horrific – I’ve read so much on your site. Thanks for bringing it to my and other people’s attention and I look forward to helping.
Best wishes,
Frances

Bonjour
Thank you for commenting, and I hope you will make
as many people as possible aware of what is happening in Spain yet again, now
the hunting season is over.
Please ask everyone you know to join in the letter
writing campaigns and whatever else to help stop this unnecessary
suffering.
Quite honestly, I fail to understand why the Galgo
Racing and Hunting Associations dont stop it! I dont understand why they
dont control the breeding of galgos and other hunting dogs, and the
indiscriminate abandonment and cruelty. I just dont understand it.
I will be sexist here and say probably because most of the members are
male.!
Ill contact you privately about
Estrella.
