The mass abandonment of galgos at the end of every hunting season in Spain, and the cruelty the majority suffer, is caused by the hunters. They are all supposed to be members of a hunting federation, although there are of course illegal hunters, and the gitanos. I have composed a letter appealing to the hunting federations to put their house in order – control breeding, introduce registration and microchipping, monitor a galgo throughout its life, responsible ownership and more.
Please would you write to the addresses below – some of them are unfortunately only email addresses – with a copy of the letter; Charl and Dioni have kindly translated it into Spanish too.
Please keep your letter polite, expressing feelings of anger will not help our cause.

Me dirijo a usted como alguien que está extremadamente preocupada por la masacre masiva anual y el abandono de galgos cada año en España, cuando la temporada de caza llega a su fin.
Por medio de internet, el mundo es ahora mas consciente de este holocausto,del sufrimiento de los perros, y de la presión emocional y física en los refugios, albergues y de los voluntarios que trabajan para hacer frente al problema. Más de 50.000 perros cada año – esto no es aceptable – y este es el único país donde esto sucede, y se permite que esto ocurra.
En el Reino Unido, los perros de caza, como foxhound, bloodhound o beagles se mantienen en perreras para este tipo de perros. Estas perreras tienen personal permanente,a los cuales se les paga para garantizar que los perros vivan en un hambiente limpio e higienico y que tengan comida y agua cada día. Ellos no sufren de un exceso de reproducción y cuando un perro ya no es apto para la caza, se le da una muerte lo mas humanamente posible en la perrera por un veterinario cualificado.
En Francia, al final de la temporada de caza, los cazadores tienen a sus perros en recintos especiales para ellos en sus casas o los llevan a una perrera, con comida y agua todos los días y, tambien aquí, la reproducción está estrictamente controlada.
La Organización Mundial para la Sanidad Animal (OUE) dispone de directrices específicas para el control de los perros abandonados y vagabundos, que fueron adoptadas por los 175 Países Miembros de la OIE, en 2009, España incluida.
El 7 de noviembre de 2007 el decreto sobre el Bienestar Animal en España se convirtió en ley. Artículos 1-3 establecen el objetivo de la ley, que es proporcionar las bases para un sistema de bienestar de los animales, las infracciones y las sanciones por incumplimiento de las mismas. Hasta ahora son pocas medidas que se han tomado para hacer que se cumplan.
El enorme número de galgos abandonados cada año causa graves problemas – accidentes en las autopistas, problemas de salud – la toxocara canis puede matar a un niño que ha estado jugado en un terreno en el que los perros callejeros han defecado.
Con la llegada de Internet y la publicidad en torno a la difícil situación de los galgos, mucha gente no quiere pasar ahora sus vacaciones en España, ni comprar productos españoles. La difícil situación de los galgos y la mala publicidad de la apropiación de tierras en Valencia ha dado lugar a que la reputación de España en el exterior este siendo severamente dañada.
Las Federaciones de Caza son organizaciones poderosas, en una posición fuerte para controlar la reproducción en masa de galgos cada año, para garantizar que los perros se mantienen en condiciones higiénicas con los alimentos y el agua todos los días, para garantizar que, si un galgo enferma o resulta herido, tenga una muerte lo mas humanamente posible en la perrera por un veterinario cualificado.
Es totalmente innecesario que se críen tantos galgos al año, sólo para que después de la temporada de caza los cazadores los abandonen y sean llevados a perreras y refugios. El galgo es un ser sensible, y merece ser tenido en un alto estima, como lo fue en los días cuando el nacimiento de un galgo era el segundo acontecimiento en importancia solamente después del nacimiento de un hijo.
Como alguien a quien le produce mucha rabia y consternación el comprobar que el abandono constante de galgos que se produce cada año es permitido que continúe, mientras que las federaciones de caza y carreras, los gobiernos municipales, provinciales, regionales y en última instancia, el Gobierno español cierran los ojos a los problemas que causa todo esto, les pido a ustedes que tomen unas medidas preventivas inmediatas.
1. Todos los galgos deberían tener un microchip, registrado a nombre de su propietario, y una base de datos elaborada con los datos de cada perro.
2. Todos los cazadores deberían registrarse para obtener una licencia de la Federación de Caza. Aquellos que no tengan la licencia deberían ser notificados, multados y confiscarles sus perros.
3. Los cazadores deberían estar obligados a completar un formulario de cada año, notificando donde van a tener a su perro al finalizar la temporada de caza, y esto debería de ser comprobado por el Seprona de manera regular, junto con funcionarios de la Federación de Caza.
4. La cría indiscriminada y sin control se debe detener.
5. A un cazador se le debería limitar el número de galgos que pudiese poseer y el debería limitar el número de galgos que puede poseer y mantener.
Siempre que sea posible, todo lo anterior debe aplicarse a los gitanos también.
No es la responsabilidad de las personas que trabajan en refugios y albergues para hacer frente al problema creado por los cazadores con galgos. Cada país fuera de España tiene sus propios problemas de los perros abandonados y callejeros que tratar. No es responsabilidad de otros países el adoptar y hacerse cargo de los miles de galgos que son abandonados cada año en España. Es la responsabilidad de la Federación de Caza el hacer frente a los problemas que esto causa y el hacer frente a la raíz del problema – que es la cría incontrolada e indiscriminada de galgos.
Sé que hay muchos miembros de la Federación de Caza que se preocupan por sus galgos y el trabajo para mantener las líneas de cría pura y es a usted y estas personas a las que les hago llegar esta petición. Usted tiene el poder de cambiar la mala imagen que se tiene en el mundo sobre los cazadores en España y del mal trato que estos les dan a los galgos.

I am writing to you as someone who is extremely concerned about the annual mass slaughter and abandonment of galgos each year in Spain, when the hunting season comes to an end.
Through the medium of the Internet, the world is now very well aware of this holocaust, the suffering of the dogs, and the emotional and physical pressure on refuges, shelters, and volunteers who work to cope with the problem. Over 50,000 dogs each year – it is not acceptable – and it is the only country where this happens, and is allowed to happen.
In the United Kingdom, hunting dogs such as foxhounds, bloodhounds and beagles are kept in hunt kennels. These kennels have permanent staff, paid to ensure the dogs live in clean, healthy conditions and have food and water every day. They do not suffer from over-breeding and, when a dog is no longer suitable for the hunt, it is euthanaised humanely at the kennels by a qualified vet.
In France, at the end of the hunting season, the hunters keep their dogs in enclosures at their home or a hunt kennels, with food and water every day and, again, breeding is strictly controlled.
The World Organisation for Animal Health (OUE) has specific guidelines for the control of abandoned and stray dogs, which were adopted by the 175 OIE Member Countries, Spain included, in 2009.
On 7th November 2007 the Spanish Animal Welfare Act became law. Articles 1-3 set out the object of the law, which is to provide the groundwork for a system of animal welfare and the offences and penalties for non-compliance. Little action has been taken to enforce this.
The huge number of abandoned galgos every year causes serious problems – accidents on motorways, health problems – toxicaris canis can kill a child which has played on ground on which stray dogs have defecated.
With the advent of the Internet and the publicity surrounding the plight of the galgos, many people will not now holiday in Spain, will not purchase Spanish goods. The plight of the galgos and the bad publicity of the land grab in Valencia has resulted in Spain’s reputation abroad being severely tarnished.
The Hunting Federation is a powerful organisation, in a strong position to control the mass breeding of galgos each year; to ensure the dogs are kept in hygienic conditions with food and water every day; to ensure that, if a galgo is sick or injured, it is humanely euthanaised by a qualified vet.
It is completely unnecessary for so many galgos to be bred each year, only to be taken to perreras and refuges because the hunters have no wish to keep them during off-hunting season. The galgo is a sentient being, and deserves to be held in high esteem, as it was in the days when the birth of a galgo was second only in importance to the birth of a son.
As someone who is sickened and appalled that the annual abandonment of galgos is allowed to continue, whilst the Hunting and Racing federations, the municipal, provincial and regional council and ultimately the Spanish Government close their eyes to the problems it causes, I appeal to you to take immediate preventative measures.
1. All galgos should be microchipped, registered in their owner’s name, and a database set up containing details of each dog.
2. All hunters should be registered to obtain a licence from the Hunting Federation. Those who do not should be reported, fined, and their dogs confiscated.
3. Hunters should be required to complete a form each year, advising of where their dog will be kept after the close of hunting, and this should be checked by Seprona on a regular basis, together with officials of the Hunting Federation.
4. Uncontrolled and indiscriminate breeding should be stopped.
5. A hunter should be limited to the number of galgos he is allowed to keep and he should be limited to the number of galgos he can own and keep.
Where possible, all the above should apply to the gitanos too.
It is not the responsibility of those working in refuges and shelters to deal with the problem created by hunters with galgos. Each country outside of Spain has its own problem of abandoned and stray dogs to deal with. It is not the responsibility of other countries to take in and rehome thousands of galgos each year. It is the responsibility of the Hunting Federation to deal with the problems it causes, to deal with the root of the problem – which is uncontrolled indiscriminate breeding of galgos.
I know there are many members of the Hunting Federation who care about their galgos and work to keep the pure breeding lines and it is to you and these people that I make this appeal. You have the power to change the bad image which the world has about Spanish hunters and their treatment of galgos.
