Volunteer at a Spanish animal shelter

It’s not too late to volunteer at a Spanish rescue shelter for your holidays in 2026. Fundacion Benjamin Mehnert in Seville explains what is involved and how grateful the associations are for all the help they can get. Contact a shelter direct, they usually provide accommodation for volunteers too.

Galgo puppies abandoned in a cave in Vera, Almeria, Spain! Now safe with Galgos Rescue Almeria

Last Sunday, two tiny galgo puppies arrived at the rescue center. Only six to seven weeks old… far too young to already face the harsh reality of this world. At that moment, we could not share much information yet, because there were still other dogs in danger. Their safety had to come first before the truth could be revealed.
But deep down, we already knew that terrible things were happening in the backstreets of Vera (a large commercial town near the coast in Almeria) — things no one should ever have to witness. Places where innocent animals are born into pure misery. Where a mother tries to raise her puppies surrounded by fear, filth, hunger, and abuse. It breaks your heart over and over again. (more…)

Adopting a Rescue Dog

I’ve had rescue dogs all my life, mostly from rescue associations. Most of them have come with problems, usually as a result of bad treatment in their past. One 4-year old galga took over 2 years before she was anything like a ‘normal’ dog, and that was after living with 4 other housemates. My current Spanish podenca came with a fear of men – what a surprise – after spending the first 7 years of her life shut in a shed and just let out for hunting. Even after over 4 years in our home, she is still nervous of men and many life situations.
So it is vitally important to understand the problems which adopting a rescue dog will bring with them, needing much patience whilst they adjust to home life, new people and situations.

6 more unwanted galgos dumped with Galgos Rescue Almeria
Help us save 6 galgos… they need us. A few days ago, we received a request we simply couldn’t ignore…A plea to help 6 galgos. 6 souls who are still with their owner (a hunter) in the Extremadura region. They have no voice. No choice. No certainty about what tomorrow will bring…We want to give them that chance. A life without fear. A warm bed. Care, love, and safety — things they’ve never truly known. But we can’t do this alone…To bring them to us, transport costs €70 per dog. And that’s only the beginning — they will need medical care, check-ups, vaccinations, everything required to finally give them a healthy start. That’s why we are asking for your help.
