  • URGENT APPEAL for donations for Scalibor collars

Animal lovers the summer months are approaching and it’s very important to protect dogs from the sandfly that causes Leishmaniosis. Every year, unfortunately, too many dogs adopted from Spain die abroad due to ignorance, poor information, wrong diagnosis, not the right treatment… So preventing infection with the Leishmania parasite is very important. Contrary to what is often said, Leishmaniosis cannot be cured, in other words your dog will have it for the rest of his or her life. Fortunately, with proper treatment and medication, the infection can be kept under control. Regular blood tests are also recommended, that way your four-legged friend can also grow old like other dogs. We protect dogs during and before the summer months with a collar combined with a pippet. A vaccination is also possible, it’s quite expensive and studies have currently not been able to show whether this vaccination gives sufficient security. (more…)

  • Protectora Scooby Medina – 25 more unwanted galgos now safe forever

    Video

From Scooby Medina.  Lined up, handed over, saved. 25 galgos
Nieves and Fermin set off last week towards Extremadura (Badajoz) to collect 33 galgos and one Breton.  With poor road conditions and severe weather alerts, this rescue could not wait.

In the end, 25 dogs made it out.  For the galgueros, a handover without regret.  For the galgos, the beginning of a new chance. It won’t be easy or immediate, but this is where everything begins. (more…)

  • PACMA – working for the animals of Spain

Thinking of all the Spanish rescue shelters in Andalucia during the terrible Storm Leonardo and praying none of them are flooded out or suffer damage. This from PACMA – Partido Animalista.

We’re writing to you today at a particularly worrying time. Given the adverse weather forecast for Andalusia, we at PACMA have had to do what no other political force is doing: demand the activation of an emergency plan that includes animals.

While the authorities are preparing (and rightly so) to protect people and infrastructure, animals remain absent from official protocols.

Overcrowded shelters, volunteers without resources, animals dependent on humans completely exposed to the cold, heavy rain, or potential flooding. This is the reality that keeps repeating itself, and from which we never seem to learn. (more…)

  • CAS International takes the fight for Spain’s hunting dogs to Brussels

While Spain continues to exclude hunting dogs from basic protection under national law, EU-level legislation and enforcement could ensure these dogs are finally protected across all Member States.

On Tuesday 27th January the European Parliament in Brussels hosted an important event to raise awareness about the cruel treatment of Spanish hunting dogs and the need for protection.  Director, Maite van Gerwen, was one of the speakers. She shared insights on the new EU regulation on the welfare of dogs and cats and explained how these rules could bring significant improvements for hunting dogs. (more…)

  • Baas Galgo to the rescue of 5 maltreated galgos

This week we received a call that broke our hearts.  They are 5 innocent creatures who have lived, or rather, barely survived their entire lives… It’s not right, and there will surely be no justice, because they belong to no one.
Thanks to Ruth and Toño, we were able to rescue the little greyhound in the first photo; she was the most urgent case since she’s in the worst condition.
Now we need a miracle and to find 4 more families willing to help us.  Their lives depend on it.  Can you lend us a paw?
