In October 2008 SEPRONA, the arm of the Guardia Civil under whose jurisdiction animal welfare comes, discovered over 300 animals which had been stolen, including a couple of hundred galgos. You can read the story here.
Sadly, by the time the case was heard in court and a decision made by the judge, many of the galgos had already died of hypothermia and sickness in the compound in which they had been placed. Those with microchips were returned to their ‘owners’, and very few were actually able to be taken by rescue associations and rehomed.
SEPRONA believes that there are now fewer cases of theft of galgos……………..
