The Galgo/Spanish Greyhound

From Sandy at Galgos Rescue Almeria.

Few people know what a Galgo is, the Spanish greyhound, which is used indiscriminately by hunters for hare hunting or on the Spanish version of the racecourse.

At the end of the season, the “lucky ones” are dumped and abandoned en masse, others are hanged, beheaded, burned, impaled or thrown into wells while still alive, again and again year after year throughout Spain.

We are talking about thousands of dogs, not isolated cases.

Known as “the children of the wind” for their ability to run at lightning speed (a spectacle of nature), as well as “the dogs of nothing and nowhere”.

Because they are considered by galgueros as objects, tools, used for pleasure and to be thrown away when they are no longer useful and profitable.

Sentenced to death since birth, they will never know affection, the warmth of a home, the comfort of a couch.

Great companion dog, really intelligent and sensitive, beautiful and discreet, gentle, patient, empathetic to children and the elderly.

The number of dumped, abandoned and tortured hunting dogs cannot even be counted.

An annual shame, not only by Spain itself but also by Europe, covered with the cloak of love under the guise of tradition and culture.

We cannot stand still.

That’s why we’re particularly interested in this breed, which is so mistreated and underestimated that it turns its owners into cold-blooded murderers.

Discovering the greyhound as a pet is a unique experience.

Only those who have had the opportunity to be part of their lives and participate in their daily routine can truly understand a galgo.
