  • Are Sighthounds really Dogs!

Back in 2008 Dr Couto of Ohio State University was carrying out research into diseases in greyhounds and galgos. I completed his survey form, as I had both greyhound and galgo. His research is mentioned in my book ‘From Heaven to Hell – The Story of the Galgo Espanol’, Chapter 8.

His findings have been published and you can read them on this link.

  • A Tether Tug…keeping dogs occupied

I’ve been sent the link to a Tether Tug ‘toy’, with the suggestion that perhaps it is something which could be used in shelters and refuges…where there is a space for dogs to play and socialise. Maybe a handy person could make one.

  • Lanzarote, Canary Islands – pet neutering launched in Playa Blanca

This should happen in towns all over Spain and the Canary Islands…dogs, cats, horses…

  • Dustbin contents 2

Following on from yesterday’s story about Dustbin contents, here is a further story from Scooby.

More proof that the Spanish HAVE to learn to neuter, the hunters have to STOP overbreeding…!

  • Dustbin contents…

If you live in Spain, this is what you might find in your bin! Usually it’s puppies….

  • Symptoms of leishmania in dogs

    General signs

Joint swelling and joint problems, difficulty in walking (stiff gait).

Lethargy and reluctance to go for walks

Constant shivering and shaking. This could be rigours, which indicates that the kidneys
are involved. If your dog has this, get to a vet as soon as possible and get the kidneys checked.

Enlarged, hard lymph glands which can be felt as lumps in the neck, just behind the jaw joint.

These are additional signs and symptoms indicated by members of the Living with Leish
    Facebook group.

Sneezing, and a cold or chest infection blocked nostrils.

Bad smell coming from the dog. Described as “Gorgonzola”, a “monkey cage” etc.

    Overheating with panting.

N.B. Many of the above signs can be confused with other illnesses. If they do not respond to conventional treatment, this may indicate that Leishmania is the underlying cause.

  • A severe case of Mange – what happens if not treated

Scooby Lucy 250 3So many wonderful Spanish people now working hard to help the abandoned and discarded dogs in their country. Yet it never fails to astound me that there sre STILL so many ignorant unfeeling people who can just walk by the sight of an animal suffering! One such case is Lucy, a little galga rescued with Scooby. Cobie tells the story.

‘This sweet little galga girl is Lucy, she´s 5 months old and was saved a few weeks ago from the perrera provincial from Valladolid by Scooby. The police had brought her there because she was walking on the street although she had an owner which was a gypsie. That person has done nothing about the severe mange she was suffering of and her whole body was covered in blood, infections and bad wounds.
