  • Calga Kiara – beating the axe attacker

Charl Kiara swimming 250 5 9 2014Update on galga Kiara, the victim of an axe attack. Charl says, ‘Kiara’s health is good. She’s improving daily and swimming helps so much. Her rehab is good and physio doing well.
The damage left cannot be sewn or fixed. There’s some nerve damage done from her wound. But she can lead a normal life. She will need care and attention and still needs a few more weeks to gain more strength and encourage more movement in her tail. To move to one side isn’t possible as such.. this doesn’t impede her. We thought the tail was dead and would hinder. So in terms of recovery it’s ten fold. That we aim for a little more.. we will keep trying. Raw pain must have run thrpugh every ounce of her being, I still cringe at the thought of what she was suffering when I saw her. For now we continue to ease her from strength to strength. ‘

  • Update on Polar – on training and recycling

Polar knackered 2 250I’ve been asked how Polar is doing. What can I say! He’s now taller than Bracken, he’s extremely naughty – there isn’t a day goes by when he doesn’t get into mischief. He has his own recycling policy – all plastic bottles should be recycled, even full ones. (Jane of Pepis tells me that’s because he had empty plastic bottles to play with at the refuge). If he can get to the cardboard recycling bag, then the contents get distributed around the courtyard. Next come the shoes – he’s already got several pairs of his own but naturally he wants the ones which we still prefer to wear! Then come the socks! He was given a bag full of socks with holes in – but no, he has to delve in my walking boot bag and pinch my socks out of that!

  • Bristol Half Marathon 2014 – fundraising for Pepis Refuge

Pepis Dog Refuge now have over 80 dogs including many galgos in their Galgo Centre. It costs 30 euros/day to feed all these dogs; add on to that the cost of wormers, Scalibor collars, flea & tick treatment. Their vet bill is currently over 3,000 euros. They desperately need money to pay all this.

So Mike is going to run the Bristol Half Marathon on 21st September to raise funds for Pepis. Please sponsor him, no matter how little, every penny counts. You can read the story of Bear, the nearly blind puppy he adopted from Pepis in March this year, and sponsor Mike here.
