  • Running the Paris 20km for GIN Galgos – sponsors urgently needed

Paris Eiffel Tower 150Greyhounds in Need sponsors and rehomes many Spanish Galgos, and the charity is to benefit from money raised by Caroline Grebbell who says,

‘I am running the Paris 20k Marathon on 14th October 2012 and I would like my sponsorship money to go to the Galgo cause. I had a rescue lurcher for twelve years (she was found abandoned in Ireland) and plan to adopt another once my circumstances change in regard to work etc, but I feel I want to help however I can. If I can raise a bit of cash by staggering 12 miles through Paris then it will all be worth it! ‘

Please support Caroline by sponsoring her run, you can find all the details here.

  • Visit Seville – see the real Seville

Macu Seville puppy 250 9 2012Province of Seville – September 2012 – the hellish life for galgos continues. This report from Macu, another incredible volunteer who works tirelessly to save the galgos and podencos from a hunting and gypsy village.

A report came to her about many animals in deplorable conditions a village of galgueros. A brave woman, she has been going to this village for 3 years to save dogs, she denounces them all the time and yet the authorities do nothing – Nada, Nada, she says! There is a galgo puppy, a 3 year old galga with a bad hip and a galga which was in danger of being stolen!

  • Osteosarcoma in Greyhounds – genetic study by the Animal Health Trust UK

Animal Health Trust logoThe Animal Health Trust, Newmarket, England, is doing a genetic study on Osteosarcoma in 8 breeds of dogs, including Greyhounds. Dr Mike Starkey is heading the research. I asked him if he had met Dr Couto of Ohio State University, who also studies greyhounds/galgos. He said ‘I met Dr. Couto at a meeting in the United States earlier this year. He is part of a consortium of researchers working on osteosarcoma (in several breeds) in the US, and we are actively collaborating with another member of the US consortium. The study to identify genetic risk factors for US Greyhounds has been ongoing for some time – our initial objective is to evaluate if UK (in particular), but also non-US, Greyhounds are likely to share the same genetic risk factors for osteosarcoma as US Greyhounds

    Dr Starkey describes his study.

  • Life of Hell for dogs in Cartegena, Murcia – Associations please join in to protect them!

Cartegena 1 250 Galgos in south Africa simialr to what I saw in La MagdalenaThis photo is of greyhounds in South Africa. The same thing is going on in Spain with galgos. I’ve received this report and it absolutely sickens me. The Spanish – probably mainly men – in authority turn a blind eye – their hunter ‘brethren’ can get away with torture and murder – BUT let an animal rescue association try to help the dogs. And then there is Hell to Pay from the authorities! Corrupt bastards! Haven’t we had enough of cronyism?!. The majority of them are men, but a few are women. And that sickens me more – they are probably mothers – they give life to a human – they should treasure the birth of life….but life in an animal means nothing to them. They at times are worse than the men!

Cartagena is apparently one of the worst area in Murcia for cruelty against animals.

  • This is the reality of life in Spain. Too late even for Scooby’s help

From the Scooby website, 9th September 2012.

    BASTARDS!!!!

It will probably not be politically correct but it is the first thing that comes to mind, that anybody is able to allow an animal to reach this sorry state, there is no other name than bastard.

  • Cordoba & Merida, Badajoz – galgos needing help

Cordoba galga 250 1 9 2012Two appeals here for help for galgos.

URGENT The first one is in Cordoba. The volunteer spotted her, the hunter was taking her to the perrera. She had obviously not long given birth, and now she is deemed useless. 7 years old and just a galgo puppy production line. Exploited without mercy. The volunteer pleaded with the hunter to hang on to Nadine for a few days whilst she found somewhere safe for the galga to go, as she has 5 dogs at home and has nowhere for this galga. She’s called Nadine. If anyone can help, urgently, please contact anateremm@gmail.com

  • warning – dog thieves loose in the English Midlands – and watch your lurchers!

A couple of days ago I read an appeal about dogs free to a good home’. I’ve never believed an animal should be given free to a good home – if you can’t keep it, take it to a shelter. The particular dog in question ended up used as live bait to train fighting dogs – naturally it was killed. Here’s a frightening warning on the same subject.
