This photo is of greyhounds in South Africa. The same thing is going on in Spain with galgos. I’ve received this report and it absolutely sickens me. The Spanish – probably mainly men – in authority turn a blind eye – their hunter ‘brethren’ can get away with torture and murder – BUT let an animal rescue association try to help the dogs. And then there is Hell to Pay from the authorities! Corrupt bastards! Haven’t we had enough of cronyism?!. The majority of them are men, but a few are women. And that sickens me more – they are probably mothers – they give life to a human – they should treasure the birth of life….but life in an animal means nothing to them. They at times are worse than the men!
Cartagena is apparently one of the worst area in Murcia for cruelty against animals.
A volunteer says
‘I knew I had problems in my village but I just believed it was ignorance of how to take care of an animal, however, here it is much worse than we thought.
There is evidence of a dog fighting gang here and a breeding pair of pitbulls kept in terrible conditions, chained with no water. The female clearly has just had pups and there are no signs of the pups; she is suffering a huge gash on her head. At the back of the property there are some dogs kept, chained in a dark enclosure, with no water, no food apart from an occasional dead rabbit, there is now only one dog left there. My worst fears for these dogs is that they are being used as bait dogs.
A couple of days ago I awoke to hear the pathetic howling of what sounded like dozens of dogs, sometimes howling or crying, barking, sounding as though they were simple going crazy. At 7 am I went out to investigate and fearing I was going to find something awful, I took my camera.
Less than 5 minutes from my house, there is a farm set back from the road, here was the source of the noise. The usually closed, large wrought iron gates were open and I walked in feeling very afraid but very sure some animals needed my help. I was then greeted by a man coming towards me looking panicked and asking me what I wanted. I told him that his dogs had barked and made noise all night and what was the matter with them. I asked to look and made me way in and what I saw shocked me so much, I couldn’t think of anything to say except BAD!
I tried to take a photo but he knocked the camera from my hand and told me to get out. What I saw hidden in amongst some trees was an enclosure, with a concrete circular wheel, there was a chain above around the circumference and the Galgos were attached to it, one behind the other, sending each other crazy, some trying to walk, some running, fighting each other and really distressed. I have used this photo as an example but what I saw was chaotic and much worse than this.
This scene has haunted me since, and the fact that my hands are tied behind my back because I live here and these men are dangerous, has caused me to look everywhere for a solution. (Volunteers, their families and their homes are targeted by the vicious rural hunters and Spanish gypsies – they will burn their cars, threaten their children…)
We are now told by an Animal Welfare lawyer that Cartagena is the worst area in the region for cruelty!! It is also the most difficult to tackle, as the judicial system here has no interest in animal cruelty. Hence, perhaps the reason why it is so bad.
The volunteer asks that other Associations which have evidence of cruelty in this region, please come forward and join us to do mass denuncias and try to make a start to end the cruelty here.
They would like to move forward with a large number of Associations in the hope they may then be taken very seriously and listened to…please stand strong against this cruelty because they have to be the voice for the animals.
ACTIN was set up to tackle cruelty, neglect and abandonment of animals in Murcia ; to bring this to the attention of the media and the authorities in the hope that they can start making some changes. They also want to bring education and awareness to the areas where it is worst and to start campaigning for neutering, which is the root of the problems.
What Spain needs is the equivalent body of the RSPCA but at the moment it seems unlikely and ACTIN can only do what we can.
Please contact the association and support them in making a denuncia against this bastard animal torturer – I won’t even give him the honour of calling him an owner!
Now, before anyone says it, I know that horse walkers are used for exercising racehorses, so why not greyhound walkers? But from what this volunteer saw in Cartagena, the galgos on the walker were being seriously abused.
If you look closely in this photo, you can see the pit bull mamas chained up

Totally beyond all belief that all this goes on + no one can take action to stop it, it’s a very dangerous place to be, these people have no fear of their actions to either animals or humans. It just seems so hopeless for the people who try so hard + needs bringing to the attention of many more, t.v, newspapers radio (which I know Viv has done). These poor abused animals need so much help, but how to do it???? Only through f/B have so many learned so much, the more that are saved, more are just bred, a never ending circle. I am not good with computers, can it be put on CAUSES.ORG, GERY2, ESDAW MAYBE SOMEONE HAS NEWSPAPER CONTACTS(SORRY, forgot to go to sm print, not re-doing it)T.V contacts, now so many getting to know these atrocities, must be ways to MAKE the public aware + get the help needed, really don’t have much to suggest, actually needs ‘mob handed’ actions taken!!!
I HAVE SENT A MESSAGE TO EVA jOHANSSON, ESDAW AS NO IDEA HOW TO GET THIS WRITTEN PIECE TO HER
Those people who are involved in the abuse of animals described above ought to be identified, punished, imposed heavy fine and imprisonment of up to 3 months. If Viv Actin can have such Animal Protection Law enacted, it should be enforced. DON’T let this cold blooded beings get away with what they are doing to the dogs!
I think HARMONY FUND of US is working in join force in giving funding hands on rescue with the VivActin group in Spain. Hopefully Harmony Fund can bring some hopes to VivActin for a start!
this is horrid what these poor dogs are going through and that poor girl getting her camera knocked out of her hands who do they think they are and the poor dogs fighting like they are all because of the horrid conditions they are in poor poor souls i do hope they get the help they need
is there any one keeping eye on the greyhounds in soth africa another set of lost souls if ant bad enough that the poor greys are in certain parts of asia now africa when are these beutiful dogs ever going to get the respect they deserve
I’m stunned that a supposedly civilized country like Spain can be so 3rd world. Do the government have no heart , do they not see how they look in the worlds eye. Shame on them.
I’m new to the plight of the galgos, just realizing how utterly dreadful there life’s must be, and such a beautiful , trusting and loving animal. I believe what goes around comes around, and these monsters who torture these defenceless creatures will suffer badly in some way, let’s just hope that its in the worst way possible.
I cryed tonight when I read some of the dreadful stories and had to turn away at some of the worst, I am an animal lover especially the sight hounds, but I have never been moved to tears like I have tonight.
If I can help in anyway someone let me know, please

Hi, Im away on a much needed holiday. I will not be checking or responding to any emails.
Please re-send important messages to me after Monday, 25th September.
The most important thing is, that associations in Spain (or like in this case especially in the Murcia-region) cooperate and work closely together. Together they will be stronger and less vulnerable and their denuncias about animal-cruelty in Spain will have more impact then. Only if there are many associations – along with spanish residents (locals)-fighting together, there will be enough pressure on the authorities (like judges, seprona, mayors) to really change anything and enforce laws. Also neutering- and education-campaigns are important to change anything for good longterm. I got to know Viv from ACTIN SPAIN during my last vacations there; she is a good, warm, honest and animal-loving person, and I really hope she will be successful and that many people and associations will support her and cooperate with her.
hi karen im sure beryl will let you know everything there is to know when she returns from spain and oh yes the rescues could do with what ever any one can do for them no matter how small every little helps i dont know if you know of any of the rescues there
please send this article to Tina at Galgos Del Sol – she runs this Galgo rescue very close to Cartagena – she has many connections and she will help in anyway she can. This has to stop – How can i join please Lynda
Have forwarded your email to Vivienne, as she wrote the article. The ACTIN website is now up and running and I am about to post a piece linking to it. I know Tina well, I supported her right from the beginning when she was a volunteer with Los Infiernos, long before GdS. Expect she will know about this already. Thanks for caring.
