4th April 2013 – Happy Belated Birthday DutchGalgoLobby
Apologies that this news is a little late. I’m currently in the UK for a funeral and flat clearing and have restricted access to a computer.
Happy 2nd Birthday DutchGalgoLobby on 4th April 2013
On April 4th, DutchGalgoLobby celebrates her 2nd birthday. In her relatively short existence, DutchGalgoLobby has achieved quite a lot. Dutch Politics are now well aware of the Galgo mistreatment in Spain and one of the parties even set up a resolution to ask the Dutch government to take action. Regretfully this resolution did not get enough votes to pass because they still think it is an internal Spanish problem, to be solved by Spain. (Subsidiarity principle)
Therefore we approached the European Parliament which is in progress but takes time. European parliament is rather sluggish!

A Spanish galguero condemns his hunting dogs to a slow death – Update
A story about two hunting dogs – not galgos or podencos – but typical of the actions of many a Spanish galguero now the hunting season has finished. If anyone can help ACTIN, please contact them direct.
UPDATE: They are saved, read it here. But now ACTIN needs funds to pay for these dogs, for vet fees, food, fostering…If you haven’t already done so, please join ACTIN and support their work.

ACTIN – fighting animal neglect and cruelty in Murcia
ACTIN is working hard to change the situation on animal cruelty and neglect in Murcia and ultimately Spain. a Spanish lawyer and animal lover has recently joined their team and you can now read the story of the first rescue they have undertaken, with the law on their side. On this link, you can read the story of Mara, a pointer chained up and neglected at Bullas, Murcia, who was rescued along with 120 podencos, galgos and other hunting dogs in January/February 2012.

Animal Welfare Support Murcia does a wonderful job in helping all types of dogs, puppies, pedigrees, puppies, xbreeds…they don’t discriminate. This is Ky, a galgo they have in their care who needs sponsoring. If you would like to sponsor this stunning galgo – or even ask to adopt him – details here. At the same time, they are working hard to save some dogs in a hellish situation and desperately need somewhere for the dogs to go, so that they can denounce the owner for cruelty, neglect and anything else they can throw at him. I know these dogs aren’t galgos, but I ask and ask for people to make a denuncia in cruelty cases. So please, share this appeal and contact any friends you have who could foster any of these dogs, or donate to them going into kennels.

Tale of a perrera dog – let it not be in vain
Vivienne Wharton lives in Murcia and is very involved in animal welfare with her two groups. Animal Welfare Support Murcia was her original group, on Facebook. Now through ACTIN she is working on trying to change the attitude of Spanish people towards animal abandonment, mistreatment, neutering, and she has written this article about the perreras – we call them killing stations – where hundreds of dogs are put to sleep every week. Her article was prompted by the unnecessary killing of a pointer – through Facebook he had been found a home, people to donate to his care – he was due to be rescued.

Malaga – galga dumped in the street with newborn pups – Galgos del Sol helps
This galga mom was found in the street, in Malaga province, with newborn pups. An appeal was launched for transport to take the family to Murcia where Galgos del Sol have offered them shelter. Thank you Tina and the team at GdS.

Murcia – illegally ‘training’ galgos – the police turn a blind eye!
Running galgos alongside a motorised vehicle – motorbike, car, van, quad bike, is illegal in Spain – except that Andalucia Junta have just passed a law to rescind this – and make it legal again. I have participated in a rescue from Spain which included a galga which had been very badly injured in this way – she went down and was dragged….photos of her are in my book. Paco luckily had great medical, physical and mental care – swimming physio, massage etc. and is now happily in a forever home in France.
This photo was taken in Murcia last week – October 2012. The man is breaking the law. The person who took the photo is a neighbour and frightened of making a denuncia because she and her family would suffer repurcussions from the hunting fraternity. Seprona won’t do anything – they are hunters too.
