  • URGENT ACTION needed from SPANISH RESCUE ASSOCIATIONS

    From Plataforma NAC

URGENT: MAXIMUM DISTRIBUTION   –  MANIFESTING SAME DOGS SAME RIGHTS – Stick with your organization!.
As you will know, they want to exclude hunting and working dogs from the royal decree of zoos nucleus their last hope of being protected. These dogs would be even more unprotected in a royal decree issued from agriculture that would only require registration, identification and a little more. Reporting the poor condition of the handrail would be even harder.

  • Pepi’s Dog Refuge visit September 2016

Pepis 400 010I recently spent a week at Pepi’s Dog Refuge where I took the money raised from my Fun Dog Show to help pay some of the vet bills.  The weather was baking hot, temperatures over 40 degrees, so the dogs spent a lot of time sleeping in the cool of their kennels.  The roofing is special material which keeps out the rain but also keeps out the sun, provided by Anpana association in Italy.

On the day I arrived, we visited the vet.  A podenco puppy had been found injured on the road in the village and xrays had been taken of his broken leg.  The vet asked Pepi’s to take him.  His leg was in a splint as in some cases with young bone, the injury can heal itself, new bone can grow.  The pup was named Vero, he’s an adorable little chap and no doubt when he has recovered, he will soon find a forever home.

Another young podenca bitch is quite an escape artist and able to climb out of her kennel to spend her days in the corridor run! She too arrived with a broken leg which has healed perfectly.Saturday was an interesting day!

Hunting with podencos starts Saturday evening and finishes Sunday lunchtime.  During that time there were several hunters, each with 4 or 5 dogs mostly podencos, hunting rabbit amongst the olive groves.  There was great concern on Saturday evening when one walked on land in front of the refuge greatly upsetting the pepi’s dogs.  Behind the house he fired off his gun, narrowly missing the corner!  Hunting is prohibited within 150 metres of property.  When the hunter saw us all he scarpered, leaving behind the dead rabbit.  Alan Brian called the Guardia (gamekeeper) who said he would have a word with the hunter.  As Alan said, it’s likely the hunter could be a relative of his!  Also, as elsewhere in Spain, if they complained to the Guardia Civil, it is very possible they would find their refuge dogs poisoned or stolen.  Hunters are very vindictive.

Sunday morning saw another hunter approach the house, 2 dead rabbits hanging from his belt.  With him was his Podenco, Braco (brown & white pointer) and a small rough-haired dog of dachshund type.  He is the local butcher in Pedrera and told us he had found the little dog and kept it.  Sadly later in the day there was a young podenco running around, obviously lost and left behind by his hunter.  We left water out for him but he had disappeared the following day.

I also saw a couple of vehicles ‘training’ the galgos …goodness knows how far the poor dogs were being made to run in the searing heat!  In the Pedrera area they are used for coursing, not hunting.  Jane remarked that no doubt one or two of them at least would be dumped at the refuge gates during the winter.

Sadly when I left on Tuesday morning, Pepi was having trouble breathing and was taken to the vet for oxygen.  She was rescued from the piggery opposite the refuge and, even with a heart problem, lived with Brians for 16 years.  She will be greatly missed by Jane and Alan but her legacy lives on in all the Pepi’s dogs rescued and rehomed.

Pepi’ Dog Refuge survives solely on donations and fundraisers.  Money is currently needed for microchipping and castration of some dogs in preparation for travelling for adoption. If you can help in any way, please do.  Without Pepi’s Dog Refuge, the dogs of Pedrera area would face a terrible life.

Introducing Vero and some of the other current Pepi’s incumbents, every one waiting for their forever home.

  • Peaceful Protest for Spanish Hounds – 1st May 2016 in London, Manchester & Glasgow – photos

Flag w pp and gn 250Early in the year when I read the Spanish Royals were to visit the Queen at Windsor and I contacted my friend Polly Matthewson of Podenco Alliance about it, suggesting a demonstration, I had no idea how it would grow.  So thanks to Polly, Martin Podman French of Podenco Support South West, Dawn Karen Walker (Manchester March) and Irene Allen (Glasgow March) for taking up the idea and developing it to the marvellous day we all had on 1st May 2016 publicising the suffering of the Spanish hounds and showing what marvellous pets they can make.  Herewith my photos from the March in Manchester – sadly it rained but didn’t dampen the spirits and we handed out lots of leaflets about the plight of the Spanish hunting dogs. (Spot me on the left holding the big banner!) The London organisers handed in a petition to the Spanish Embassy and also No 10 Downing Street.

  • Neal’s Yard – help Galga Petra

Neal's Yard Julie 250My friend Julie has organised a Neal’s Yard fundraiser for Pepis Refuge. Take a look at her website here, lots of lovely natural products, to treat/pamper yourself and as gifts for friends for Xmas. I use the foot balm for tired feet(!), joint capsules, lip gloss – all suitable for sensitive skins too. You can order any time.

One of the dogs you will be helping is Petra, who was recently dumped tied to the main gates with a tight cord round her neck. Jane Brian says it is a long time since they have a dog so terrified of life as Petra. Below you can see the neck cord (against Alan’s hand). If you look carefully behind the blue bed, you’ll see her hiding there. It makes it difficult to clean the kennel as, besides humans, she is terrified of the brush, shovel, water to clean the concrete.

  • Prodeanse, Seville – Galgo puppy saved and needing help

Paula Prodeanse puppy 1 250 1 2014This poor galga has been named Paula, a baby of about 3 months old, taken from a gypsy by Prodeanse, Seville, one of the shelters I visited in 2012. She had vomiting, diarrhea – from which she was dehydrated – and a broken leg. It’s not the first dog that they have taken from this man, who cares very little about his animals.

Prodeanse are asking for your help to pay the vet fees for Paula. The operation to repair her leg will be between 600-700 euros and there is all the medication for her too. Here’s a Bing translation of their appeal.

Loli says, ‘This is what we have to part the operation that will be more than 600 euros and we don’t have the money to pay for it yet. We need your help, it will invoice.

  • Galgo Tico takes a bath – update on beating those who abandoned and injured him

Tiko bath time 250 7 12 2013Tico’s bathtime! Here are words from Sandra.

Tico walked by, panicking, dark road of abandonment and distress, carried away by the swing of steps without any sense, direct to certain death. Suddenly, through the darkness, a light blinded him for a moment, “finally someone coming to my rescue,” he thought. But that illusion vanished, remained a wrenching pain that not only broke bones, but the soul. Suddenly HE shot hundreds of feet and HIS body joined the cold and rough asphalt.

  • Portugal Dog Rescue – Duke now in rehab with 112carlot

Whilst I was in Spain for Xmas, I spent a few days at 112carlotagalgos and got to meet Duke, son of Estrela who I fostered for a short while before taking her to her forever home in the UK. He is now looking stunning but is still very nervous and retreats to his bed or the other end of the orchard whenever someone enters. Here you can see an update on how he is doing with Charl’s special touch.

  • Galgos saved from Badajoz perrera en route to 112carlotagalgos – please donate

Charl Tara 250 11 2013Tara is just 1 year old and already experienced the trauma of being dumped in Badajoz perrera by her galguero. She has been rescued. Now renamed AMBER by Charl del Rio, she will be coming to 112carlotagalgos on 30/11/2013 with four other rescued galgos from Badajoz. Victor, Zach, Phoebe and Zara will be leaving the hell of the killing station too and travelling with Amber to start their new life at the finca under the loving hand of the Del Rio’s.

Poor little Zara is coming with a fractured leg and, with the cost of release fees, vaccines etc plus residency fees until pick up on Saturday not to even mention surgery for Zara, castration, other medical treatment needed the cost is massive.
