Life is cheap on the streets of Spain
I was told a story by some friends who have been in Southern Spain for a few months. They were helping to catch a podenca living rough with her puppies at the side of a road, scavenging around rubbish bins to survive. It took over two weeks to catch them, the puppies first. Unfortunately during this time, one of the puppies got onto the road and was knocked down. The driver did not stop, but the car behind did, pulled into the side of the road and went to rescue the pup. Before he could, the Guardia Civil pulled up, told the young Dutch driver he couldn’t park, taken away and fined 200 euros. They weren’t interested in the injured puppy.
It managed somehow to draw itself off the road and hide and was eventually found and taken to the vet. Sadly it died.

Cordoba galga and puppies – anyone any room for them?
Here is a nice story about a galga and her puppies – after two days of hard work and a long wait this family have been rescued. The pups were the first to be rescued, they are two females, Margarita and Alegría, and three males, Wolf, Flip and Taz. They’re small, about 2 or 3 months, and moderate size, have every appearance of galgos but with an abandoned galga mom, one can never be sure. The mom hasbeen called Mami; in order to catch her, one of the puppies was used as a decoy, to persuade her to follow the volunteers through streets in the city until they could catch her.
She is a beautiful young dog, large size, white with black spots, has a lot of fear but wants to be loving. The family are now safe, but El Arca de Noe has nowhere to put them, can anyone help? If you can help write to elarcadenoecordoba@gmail.com
UPDATE – I’m happy to report that this galga and puppies have now been taken in by two refuges.

Life in the fast lane in Cadiz – not if you’re an injured galgo
And another example of how so many Spaniards turn away from injured and abandoned animals. This galgo is injured,(right hind leg) very frightened, lying in a car park, just metres away from a hotel/restaurant. No one goes to help him. Can anyone find room for me to take him? mariavazquez.cadiz @ gmail.com

Cordoba galga & puppies living under a motorway – help needed
This appeal has come in from El Arca de Noe in Cordoba, they don’t have anywhere to put this galga and her puppies. Here’s the story, can anyone help?
This case is very urgent and please help! This is a mama galga with several puppies, she delivered along a highway! There is little food so a villager in a neighborhood has managed to put a bit down. But Mommy has to go find more food, and puppies are left, and now 4 of them who crossed the road to follow her have been hit and killed.

A week in the life of an animal rescuer in Spain – could you hack it?!
Regular readers will know that wherever possible I praise the fantastic volunteers in Spain who give so much of their time and emotional and physical effort in helping the abandoned and mistreated animals, often at great cost to themselves.
So many stories continue to arrive in my Inbox, not just for help for galgos and podencos but other dogs as well. As I speak, efforts are being made by volunteers to catch a family of podencos, other galgos loose on the streets of several towns…..it is never ending.
This story is one example of a week in the life of a volunteer.

Galgo Bracken – my latest foster dog, looking for his forever family
This beautiful boy is Bracken. He was rescued earlier this year, waiting outside a supermarket with a badly injured front leg – the bone was sticking out. Even though he must have been in awful pain, he was still gentle and affectionate to those who took him in their loving care and back to a place of safety. The refuge vet operated on him and he was placed in foster car whilst his injury healed.
A couple of weeks ago he came to join my canine family at my home in France. He had been reserved by a lady in the UK but circumstances have changed and she can no longer take him. So he is now looking again for his forever home.
