  • La Mairena, Costa del Sol – Galgos on Death Row – Can anyone help?

Mairena perera death row 2 250 La Mairena. Heard of it? It’s on the Costa del Sol. Apparently beautiful white sandy beaches, tree lined avenues, and a municipal dog pound where the hunters are already taking their galgos to be euthanaised. You won’t find that fact mentioned in the estate agent and tourist office brochures!

7 galgos – look at the pictures, beautiful dogs – just taken to be killed. 6 females and 1 male. And why now – the hunting season only began in September. Admittedly, I suppose one could argue that it is better that they be taken there and euthanaised, rather than hung from a tree, dropped down a deep well, burned alive, dumped on a motorway. If there are any shelters which have room to take these dogs, and prepare them for adoption abroad, please contact samper7@hotmail.com urgently.

  • Meet the Podencos – Ibizan Hounds – with SARA Lanzarote and Pro-Galgo Spain

Podenco lola-canarias1 250 Podencos (also known as Ibizan Hound) are another seriously abused Spanish hunting dog – and life is especially difficult for them on the Spanish Islands. I often mention the SARA Lanzarote shelter, which does amazing work, and Pro-Galgo work with a volunteer on Las Palmas.

Both organisations prepare their dogs for adoption abroad – as you can imagine, flights can be costly and the dogs have to be accompanied.

  • Cruelty to puppies – sign the petition to Stop The Cruelty

On the other hand, these 2 puppies were not so lucky. Marie Dutto send me this plea. Please sign the petition for her.

  • Join the Campaign to protect the dogs of Spain – write to your MEP

An appeal popped into my Inbox this week, which I wish to share with you, in the hope that you will all write to your local MEP, as requested. You will find a link at the end of the post which will connect you to a website on which you will be able to find the contact details of your MEP. Please cross post where possible.

Herewith the letter, either post or email

    Dear Sir or Madam,

I want to bring to your attention a very sad situation in your country which is of great concern to me and to many of my Spanish friends. This involves considerable cruelty to animals and in particular to dogs. Although there are laws to prevent such cruelty they are rarely, if ever enforced and there is a rather large gap in the law that regards greyhound racing dogs as “working dogs” which are therefore not covered by the law. After the rabbit-hunting season is over they either get thrown out, dumped on the motorway or are hanged.

  • Galgo puppy painted in red varnish – curses on the Spaniard who did this

Galgo puppy painted with red varnish 225 From Pro-Galgo. Some of the people of Linares impresentables have fun with this helpless puppy. He painted with red varnish all his tiny body, and 2 weeks later you can still see the last spots of paint on his head. The volunteers have tried very hard to removed as much of the varnish as possible, which unfortunately could be toxic, especially for a baby. He has been baptized MAX, is now much better and has received his first vaccine. The case has been reported but as usual, nothing is being done.

MAX next week cones to us from his temporary shelter, the foster mum says he is super affectionate and loves walking in her arms all day.
