La Mairena, Costa del Sol – Galgos on Death Row – Can anyone help?

Mairena perera death row 2 250 La Mairena. Heard of it? It’s on the Costa del Sol. Apparently beautiful white sandy beaches, tree lined avenues, and a municipal dog pound where the hunters are already taking their galgos to be euthanaised. You won’t find that fact mentioned in the estate agent and tourist office brochures!

7 galgos – look at the pictures, beautiful dogs – just taken to be killed. 6 females and 1 male. And why now – the hunting season only began in September. Admittedly, I suppose one could argue that it is better that they be taken there and euthanaised, rather than hung from a tree, dropped down a deep well, burned alive, dumped on a motorway. If there are any shelters which have room to take these dogs, and prepare them for adoption abroad, please contact samper7@hotmail.com urgently.

But it’s this issue of ‘disposable dogs’ which I really cannot understand – these galguerros and gitans just do not seem to put any value on a life. Can anyone explain to me what it is in the makeup of these particular Spaniards which makes them behave like this. What is it in the character which makes many Spaniards treat animals like this – not just the dogs, but the bulls and donkeys………………..

I’m the first to admit that the situation with racing greyhounds in Ireland and Great Britain is pretty disgraceful too, but we’re talking about perhaps 15,000 greyhounds each year, whilst in Spain it’s 50,000 galgos each year, possibly more.

What can we do to help the shelters and associations in Spain who are trying to deal with this problem, year after year? How can we help them to change it?

And don’t forget, if there is a Spanish association or shelter which can help these dogs, contact samper7@hotmail.com

If you are not in Spain and want to help, please contact one of the official galgo rescue associations, some of which are listed in the right hand column of Galgo News Home Page, as these dogs will need vaccinations and blood tests before being taken into another country. This is the only way to ensure that no country refuses to allow these dogs over its border, as Belgium proposed.

    Bonjour Valarie
Yes, Charl del Rio has circulated the
informationto all the associations etc in Spain. Its a case of
alerting as many people as possible. Trouble is that the refuges and
shelters are all so full of dogs already. But if we dont try, theres no chance
    of getting them out.
