  • Give rescue dogs space and time to adjust to a new home

    Carmela 400
We’ve always had rescue dogs – that’s 70+ years of living with rescue dogs! Some adjust to home life reasonably easily, others take much longer. The longest for me was my galga Carmela who took about 2 1/2 years to become a ‘normal’ dog, even though she lived with 4 others!

Last year some neighbours adopted a small terrier mix. He’d already had one home, this was his second. He was typical terrier, always on the go, needed exercise but also needed to socialise with other dogs, as he always barked at them. We used to take our dogs to a local dog park meet so I suggested they brought Billy with them , once a week meets. Sadly they didn’t, they didn’t walk him, in fact hardly seemed to do more than just keep him at home and in the garden. I didn’t see them for a few months and when I finally did, I asked about Billy. ‘Oh, we took him back, he nipped one of our visitors’. I walked away rather than say what I was thinking!!!

Here’s a story about a resce dog illustrating just how much care and thought has to go into adoting a rescue dog.

I do hope Billy’s next home after our neighbours’ was a forever one with people who understood him and his needs.

  • Arca de Noe – rescuing an injured galga

Arca de Noe injured galgo 400 3 2024
From Greyhounds In Need, who support the Arca de Noe Protectora in Spain

So many abandoned galgos wandering the campo and towns, so many at risk on the roads. And so many drivers don’t care if they hit one! Thank goodness for the kind people who do stop and help.

The wonderful team at Arca de Noe, Albacete rescued this little galga, Pau, from the roadside where she had been left after having been run over. She was taken to the vet where she was treated and is now recovering in a loving foster home.

Thank you to everyone at Arca de Noe

  • Galga Milagro – sadly her injured leg couldn’t be saved

    GRA Milagro 400 1 3 3034
With the French rescue association I worked with (till moving back to the UK) we brought out several galgo and podenco tripods. They always amazed me with how they adapted to having 3 legs instead of 4. Here’s the story of a new tripod with Galgos Rescue Almeria. If you can donate towards vet fees they will be very grateful as they are full to bursting with hounds.

    ‘Milagro

3/03. She had an appointment with the traumatologist. The vet and we did everything we could to save her leg, but in vain. Her first surgery in September ensured that her leg was back in the correct position. Barely a week after the surgery things went wrong, an infection developed in the joint, which meant she had to be hospitalised for 10 days and was given a course of antibiotics. This went well and so did her rehabilitation. During the 6 months that followed, she regularly developed inflammation in her joint, causing her paw to become swollen.

  • Heartworm – Filaria – in dogs

Heartworm (also known as filaria) is yet another terrible disease caused by the mosquito which can be a killer if not diagnosed and treated. Rescued galgos and podencos are tested for filaria, along with the other Mediterranean diseases like leishmania, ehrlichia.

During my 10 years of working on the rescue team of L’Europe des Levriers bringing galgos and podencos from Spain to France for foster and rehoming, we only actually brought out 2 galgos who were suffering from the disease. This is because the stress of the journey and changing situation could make the situation worse.

Heartworm is actually a parasitic roundworm which lives in the lungs and heart of the host animal. Once diagnosed and treatment starts, the animal must be kept as quiet as possible with little exercise so as not to trigger movement of the worm.

  • Starving and ill on the streets of Spain

    Starving galgo 1 400 2 2024
The galgueros continue to be heartless and there is STILL no law to protect their hounds from the maltreatment thrust upon them.

This little dog has appeared tied up, with a bandage on its leg, she is very thin. In Leganes. No chip, of course!

Luckily a volunteer found room for her under the protection of an animal rescue association (I’ve asked which one).

Update: the galga has been taken care of at the vet, she tested negative for infectious diseases, she is very thin as you see and has pneumonia so she is under treatment. She needs to be in a foster home because she can’t get into a shelter where it’s too cold with pneumonia, until she’s recovered. They think she just gave birth.

  • Young, starving and abandoned on the streets of Spain

End of hunting and of course most regions of Spain are awash with abandoned galgos and podencos. Here is a young galgo, starving and crying. The shelters are full to overflowing – it’s heartbreaking and in the 16 years I’ve been involved in the rescue of galgos and podencos, the only situation which has changed is that the hunters no longer hang their dogs.
