I often say galgos and podencos should come with a health warning – one is never enough, they are such wonderful loving and rewarding dogs. We regularly had 4 or 5 at our farm in France, a couple of which were failed fosters! Here’s a lovely story about a canine family adopted through Greyhounds In Need.

Galgos 112 to the rescue of an injured galga
Galgos 112 picked up this poor injured galgo at the beginning of the week. They are looking for an urgent foster for him in the Girona area.‘This is Mar, picked up in this state in a town of Jaén, no chip but with an injury on the right knee and tendon. By having an open wound it is infected. She needs surgery asap so the tendon doesn’t retract and we can save that paw. To be able to operate it we need a foster home in Girona or as close as possible. Foster homes are urgently needed for injured galgos to recover from operations.
If you are in Span and can foster, please don’t hesitate and send your details and phone number to info@galgos112.com and we will get back to you quickly.
The association takes care of all veterinary expenses and transportation of the foster dogs. Operation Mar is going to pay off with the help of all of you. We’re counting on you!

Galgos Rescue Almeria – storm damage meaning costly repairs for the hound shelter
A couple of nights ago we suffered a storm and strong winds which unfortunately caused a lot of damage to our Rescue center. A large part of the fence has been torn loose and our storage space has been completely destroyed.
In addition to our usual daily tasks, we now have days of cleaning up debris. A solution will also have to be found for the storage space.

Volunteer at a Spanish rescue shelter
On a very rainy day at my home in the UK it’s that time of year to think about holidays and summer sun. Many Spanish shelters welcome volunteers to help with the care of their rescued hounds and it’s very rewarding. Many first-time volunteers return again and again.
This link is to the galgo and podenco rescue associations by country – many Spanish ones are listed – for both mainland Spain and the Canary Islands. Please contact them direct, you will be welcomed with open arms.

The Galgo Espagnol – a majestic dog treated as trash by Spanish Galgueros
The galgo, unlike all other dog breeds, was not created and selected by man, it is a product of nature already represented in the first graffiti of upper Mesopotamia and has reached us practically intact. The man, who transforms everything, did not feel the need to intervene on the galgo.
He was the first animal to collaborate with man, he is morbidly attached to his master, he is lazy and loves to sleep, but he is ready to transform into a very fast hunter, with an attentive eye and snappy muscles.
He is tender, affectionate, reserved, never intrusive, discreet presence by your side.
It is a majestic dog, fast as the wind and light as a feather.
One of the most revered races in antiquity, to the point of being forbidden its ownership to peasants and poor people for the exclusive use of nobles and rich people.

Galga Eden in his forever home
Do you remember the terrible sights of this poor galgo covered in ticks – I’ve never seen such a bad case in all the 16 years I’ve been involved with galgo and podenco rescue. After a concerted effort by Galgos Rescue Almeria and their team of vets, Eden made an amazing recovery and this is a heartwarming photo of her in her forever home.
