  • Hunting with galgos in Spain – will it ever end?

Scooby China 250 10 2012From Cobie at Scooby Residencia Valladolid. This poor little galga named China was brought to the Scooby residencia by a galguero because she is obviously very sick. Surely she has leishmaniosis, very much hairloss over her whole body, long nails on her feet which makes walking very painful for her, her eartips completely bare, her back and tail almost bare and a look in her eyes which makes you want to cry for feeling so sorry for her.

The galguero injected her with all kinds of stuff and gave her tablets, God may know which ones, but of course, that did no good to her so he wanted to dispose her.

  • The magic of Seville motorways…

Seville Galgo Vllm 1701 10 2012Is this dog dead? Has to be. In a ditch at the side of a Seville motorway. Or is it? What would you do? This is what a volunteer did. Apologies for the Google translation

  • Trip to Spain 3 – Malaga – 112carlotagalgos

Malaga 1 200A long time ago, back in the 1960/70s, way before Spain went mad building huge concrete monstrosities alongside the beach road to places like Benalmadena, Torremolinos, Tossa del Mar, Estepona, my mother used to winter there rather than survive in the damp atmostphere of Northwest England. I always imagined these places as separate holiday towns along the Spanish coast.

I was staggered to find that now they are all part of Malaga – province of Malaga to be exact.

  • Dumped by the galguero already – Galgos which won’t hunt

Sombra galga 200 10 2012Hunting in Spain has barely started and already the galgueros are disposing of their hounds. This beauty is called Shadow, she isn’t interested in hunting, so the galguero won’t keep her ‘she’s useless’ he says. Previously he got ride of Capote and the volunteer found an association to take him for adoption.

Now the hunter has another galgo, besides Shadow – how many will he chuck out? He’s given the volunteer a week to take the dogs…alomready a couple of days have gone! Contact is Gloria (Spain) 656672416 glorialaraneyra@hotmail.com

  • Spanish Galga – a survivor from a hellish life with a Spanish hunter

Cornelia 250 2 10 2012Cornelia; this galga is 6 years old and her body shows what a very hard life she has suffered, battered body covered in scars from wounds, ears cut with scissors. She arrived so starved that it was uncertain if she would live. But she is a fighter with a strong will, she was not ready to give up! Now recovered and waiting for someone to adopt her and teach her what it is like to live in a home, with a comfy bed, plenty of food, receive love. In exchange she will devote the rest of her life to loving you. See her album .

  • Death on the Streets of Seville – Prodeanse working hard

Prodeanse starved 250 to death on the street 9 2012In my report Trip to Spain 2, I wrote about Prodeanse, a small association covering a 40km radius from Alcala del Rio in the Province of Seville. It is a very bad area in which to be a dog, especially a galgo. Since my visit, one of the volunteers came across this galgo, dead on the street…this is the harsh reality for dozens of puppies and dogs abandoned on the streets of Spain. If you would like to help Prodeanse with their work to save and rehome dogs in their area, visit their website.

  • Help the Aged – adopt an older galgo –

Elsa 2 250 9 2012Some galgos are lucky enough – if you can call it lucky to survive several years at the hands of a galguero – to reach 7 or even 10 years of age. They desperately need to live out the rest of their lives in the comfort of a loving home, and here are three.

Elsa and Maika are particularly sad stories and an example of the hypocrisy of the Spanish authorities. Siblings, rescued at 3 yrs by a lady and taken into her home, 7 years later they find themselves in a shelter. With so many abandoned dogs living on the streets of Spain, it’s hard not to want to help them, and this is the situation in which Elsa and Maika’s Mom found herself.
