  • Life on the frontline of Animal Rescue in Spain

Pepis Sanchez 2 400 (SWanchez) This is what life is like at Pepis Dog Refuge for Jane and Alan Brian. In 2005 they moved to Spain for a retirement life, instead this is what they cope with 24/7/365. Neither of them are in the best of health, but they carry on caring for the dogs the local Spanish throw out. They survive only on donations. Please join their teaming – just the cost of a cup of coffee a month – or a monthly donation of £5/5 euros. Every little helps.

Jane writes. ‘Being a legal refuge, you are limited to how many dogs you can take, this alone is a problem. WHY, because Seprona the guardia civil can prosecute you for having over your quota, because it is illegal to do that,so we are here and easy targets. BUT it is also illegal to dump dogs, and when they do we have to deal with it/ Do we untie them and let them go to be shot or starve to death. NO we don’t, we deal with it.

BUT who is going to prosecute the people who dump them? NO ONE, because you have to prove they dumped them, no chip no proof. The law is useless.

That being said, the dogs can be removed and destroyed. Welcome to Spain.

  • 2nd PAES Conference – Challenging the Iceberg – 25& 25 February 2017

PAES Conference 2017 400The task facing Rescue and Animal Welfare Organisations in Spain is huge and relentless.
The constant flow of Animals needing rescue, care and re-homing is similar to seeing the tip of an Iceberg. As with an Iceberg we are seeing the impact of only a small proportion of the problem, the vast majority lies below the surface.

The unseen mass, is, among others, a compound failure of a clear understanding of the Law affecting Animal Welfare.

What are the responsibilities and accountabilities of the various agencies ,Municipal, Law Enforcement, Veterinary and Legal in applying and reinforcing the Law?

  • SOS Rescue – catching abandoned galgos

This is a video of SOS Rescue in Spain, trying to catch abandoned galgos. It is on facebook so I’m not sure if you can view it, I have asked if it can be put on Youtube.

Vincente Cervero Lopez says ‘Currently we have 6 Rescue teams in Castilla La Mancha, Madrid and Murcia. we want to make two rescue teams more, to be able to help more and better. The equipment for each team costs around 600 euros, which includes loops and traps to capture terrified galgos, a microchip reader, networks and kennel’.

  • Badly injured on a Spanish road – Galgos112 to the rescue

Galgos 112 Valencia xray 400Galgos112 writes.

29/12 2016 – This end of the year is being particularly hard. The requests we receive daily for help from our team are enormous. And unfortunately we can’t do it all. We don’t have shelter and we rely exclusively on our foster homes, but if there are no houses free we can’t do much more.

Today’s the day we go back to making a great effort and draw strength from where almost no longer do we have anything left…. but impossible not to help this galga, in Valencia, we picked up this princess in a terrible state.

Open fractures of the two front legs, hip fracture, pneumothorax, a deep cut in the bottom and the entire body, scored and covered with wounds… and in so much pain. This small and sweet galguita is no more than two years old. We have called her Luba. Now we wait for her to regain her strength and stabilize to go into surgery.

  • Ban the televising of galgo racing and hunting – Association BaasGalgo calls on your support.

Another petition to sign, raised by Association Baas Galgo – addressed to the director of Castil1a-la Mancha TV and also the Regional Government of Castilla-la Mancha.

    Here is a translation.

Att of Carmen Amores(Director of Castilla La Mancha Television)

The Association BaasGalgo can neither understand nor conceive, that public service television, subsidized by all Spaniards is the accomplice to the world of hunting and racing with galgo, where there is so much suffering, death and abandonment.

A world where animals are exploited to exhaustion or injury to then be discarded, abandoned or slaughtered because they could no longer fulfill the expectations for which they were raised. A world in which they are bred indiscriminately, neglect and abuse are linked to them, even after complaints and court trials where people have been convicted, they are still used as tools.

As association devoted to the fight against the neglect and abuse of the Galgo in Spain, we urge the public entity to reconsider the issue of galgo racing and hunting.

The Association calls for change and this is clearly shown in the massive demonstrations that are convened every year against the use of the Galgo as a tool.

Each year thousands of dogs are abandoned or slaughtered in horrible ways, a fact that year after year we check and we suffer with them. Equally the Spanish Society and International Communities are aware of the cruelty involved in this “hobby”.

We urge the direction of Castilla La Mancha television and thoser responsible for content that they behave in an ethical way and take a step forward with courage to delete this type of content from your television output. It is NOT a sport.
