  • Petition to the EU – ban hunting with galgos

Petition to the European Parliament to ban hunting with galgos. I personally don’t think banning it is the answer as it will simply ‘go underground’ and make it impossible to police, just as hare coursing in the UK was made illegal but it still goes on.

  • Seville – Galguero dumps galgos in deep well – the horror continues

5th December 2016. The Guardia Civil investigates a new case of animal abuse, which calls into question the use of some hunters of the greyhounds they use in competitions. Although this time, the alert voice that has served to rescue three greyhounds from a deep well was given by a member of the Osuna hunter society.

According to the Armed Forces, the man alerted the firefighters after hearing howling and screaming dogs and checking that the howls were coming out of a dry pit, about seven meters deep.

The firefighters descended to the well and raised the dogs using harnesses. The animals were delivered to the Seprona of Osuna who initiated the investigations to find the owner.

It was not difficult because the dogs were identified. Two of the dogs have a microchip and the third had a scar on the left side of the neck; Which could indicate that the device had been ripped off. But he has a tattoo on his left ear. This is a common brand in federated dogs for competitions. The agents consulted with the Andalusian Federation of Hunting and the number of the tattoo is associated with a microchip. The owner was traced.

  • Living in Spain – not for the faint-hearted

ACTIN viv and girls on patio 400Most people dream of retiring to a life in the sun, many consider running a business. Spain is one of the top destinations and that’s just what Vivienne Wharton decided to do in 2007. As Founder of ACTIN, she recently stepped down as President and had time to chat to me about life in Spain.

I asked her why she chose the Cartagena area of Murcia, as Spain is such a large country! ‘It was really by accident. My best friend had moved here and whilst I was visiting her I came across Tara Casa, which was perfect for my plans to create a retreat. I hadn’t planned on living in Spain full time but to commute for the retreats. But as often happens, life doesn’t always take the path you plan. The previous owners abandoned their 2 dogs at the house and so the move to Tara Casa became permanent’.

Like a lot of animal lovers in Spain, it is virtually impossible to turn a blind eye to the abandonment and cruelty which exists on the doorstep, especially dogs and cats but also for horses and donkeys. Living among the beautiful almond groves, Viv had the same problem.

  • Directory of Spanish animal rescue associations

Link to the Directory. Most of them are overflowing with galgos and podencos and other Spanish hunting dogs. If you can adopt a dog, DON’T adopt from a breeder or from a perrera. You’re putting money in the pocket of the breeder aqnd the perrera dog could be sick.

  • Galgos galore at Pepis Refuge – please help feed them

Starved galgo 1 400 25 11 2016It’s a nightmare for Jane and Alan Brian at Pepis Refuge in Pedrera, between Malaga and Seville – abandoned and injured and starving galgos and podencos in the olive groves around the refuge. there’s no letup. Jane tells the story. ‘We’ve got an abandoned podenco up the lane from the refuge which they have been feeding for 2 weeks in an effort to catch him, although there’s no room for him because the refuge is full! Last week when we went up the track to feed the Podenco, he was not there…but this lad was…a bag of bones and too weak to put up any resistance. Could we leave him there as we dont have any space left to keep him and an extra mouth to feed on an already overstretched budget….A big fat NO…A small meat dinner and a soft place to lay in the warm sun…and he rested.

Now extra blankets and a warm coat and four more meat dinners, he was settled down for the night.

Now see him on the 2nd photo below, one week on! We’ve named him Callum.’

As well as Callum, look what else they found tied to the refuge gates this week!

  • Introducing clicker training with feeding your dog

Clicker training Whole Dog Journal 400Extract from Training the Best Dog Ever

First, let’s teach your dog the value of the click. Begin that lesson by once again hand-feeding all your dog’s meals over the next four days. In general, I find that hand-feeding is a good exercise to reintroduce whenever my dogs (or other dogs that I am boarding and training) are learning a new, difficult skill, or when I sense that they are beginning to lose focus.

  • Petition – stop Tesco promoting greyhound racing in the UK

Please sign and share widely. How about someone in the UK organising a protest outside a large Tesco store and getting the media involved?

  • 80,000-100,00 galgos a year – discarded like trash by the Spanish galguero!

2 galgos at the gates 400 22 11 2014Another National Geographic Video highlighting the maltreatment and abuse of galgos in Spain. Whilst the larger associations are mentioned, there are many which don’t get such exposure and yet also have many rescued galgos ready for adoption, like Pepis Dog Refuge where unwanted galgos are often left tied at the refuge gates or thrown over the fence which causes injury.

  • Happy ending for a rescued galgo – Paloma in Italy

  • Argentina bans Galgo Racing – but will it be driven underground now?

Argentina bans galgo racing 1 400ARGENTINA BANS GREYHOUND RACING!!!! The measure includes jail terms of up to 4 years and fines for anyone who organizes, participates in or promotes dog races. The petition to the government raised an incredible 409 251 signatures!

The downside of this victory might be that the ‘sport’ will now be driven underground where there will be no control over how races are run and how the dogs are treated, such as happened in the UK when hare coursing was made illegal, and dog fighting.
