Guam is an island in the Western Pacific Ocean, the largest of the Mariana Islands. It belongs to the USA. Guam Greyhound Racetrack closed abruptly in November, resulting in hundreds of greyhounds being handed out to anyone who asked. The world is watching and protesting, and greyound rescue associations in the USA are desperately trying to deal with the situation. Pat Getz of Greyhound Protection League reports that the first two greyhounds, Houdini and Jet Li, have just left Guam. They are being flown to California, and a CA greyhound group will care for them till they are adopted out!

Tomorrow (26/11/08) a team of volunteers from Levriers in Danger are heading to Spain for 4 days, accompanied by group of journalists who will report on the plight of the galgos.

The team are also carrying with them 2 lorry loads of donated goods for the Spanish refuges, and they will return with 17 dogs for rehoming in France.

Louis-Marie, president of Levriers in Danger, says it is of great importance to alert public opinion to the horrors of the plight of the galgos, and against which the Spanish volunteers, refuges and all rescue associations battle each day.

Two networks which traffic in stolen hunting dogs in half of Spain were charging up to 30,000 euros for the best dogs, and sacrificing the least fit.

Cristina Narbona, was a very vocal Environment minister in the Spanish Government. Sadly she was replaced earlier this year. Read about her.

Charlotte, a tireless campaigner for galgos, recently had an article published in The Euro Weekly News, highlighting the plight of the galgos in Spain, as the hunting season is set to start next month.

She is, however, somewhat frustrated in that the editor of the paper has used his ‘editorial licence’ and linked the article to Adana refuge, rather than to Charlotte herself.

Whilst Adana does fantastic work for abandoned animals in southern Spain, they are not as heavily involved with rescuing galgos as many of the other associations and refuges with which Charlotte has contact.
