More publicity in the UK for the plight of the galgos, and theFrenchPaper has this month published a Letter to the Editor from Beatrice Monnet of L’Europe des Levriers.

Swedish wolf hunt condemned
The Swedish government was criticised by animal protection and conservation organisations across Europe in December, after it authorised the killing of a substantial proportion of the country’s wolf population. No less than 12,000 applied to hunt 27 wolves, the set quota. The majority of animals were killed on the first day of what was believed to be a less than humane hunt. Sweden’s wolf population has only just started to recover after the species became seriously endangered in the 1970s. For this reason, wolves have not been hunted there for over 45 years. Wolves are a protected species under the EU’s Habitats Directive, but may be killed if they threaten livestock or a country’s economic situation.
So why can’t the EU condemn what happens to Spain’s galgos?!!

I have today received a reply to my letter of 18 November to the European Commission in respect of the welfare of dogs in Spain.
‘Dear Madam
Thank you for your letter of 18 November 2009 concerning the welfare of dogs in Spain. Comissioner Vassiliou has asked me to reply on her behalf.
The situation you are describing in your letter raises serious concerns for the welfare of those greyhound racing dogs which are neglected or killed at the end of their working season. You also write that there are pet dogs which are abandoned by teporary residents of Spain at the time of their return to their home countries.

Tina says ‘My friends did an excellent job and I feel they have definately helped get the message out about what these poor dogs go through. Spain is a wonderful country which I love but without doubt needs more and more eductaion programmes in schools and of course needs to actually start enforcing their laws regarding this animal cruelty.
Further to the campaign which was organised to protest against the proposal to introduce greyhound racing in the Philippines, I have today received a letter from the Office of the President – dated 28 September!
‘Dear Mrs Brennan
On behalf of Her Excellency President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, we would like to acknowledge your letter expressing your views relative to greyhound racing.
It is worthy to note that a foreign-born citizen like you finds time to communicate her opinion and campaign for the protection of animals.

The article catalogues the wastage of greyhounds under Peterson’s ‘care’ and the callous attitude adopted by Peterson – affording these greyhounds, little or no compassion – when pressured by the gambling industry to supply that all important betting medium at the cheapest possible price.
