Gesser is another perrera in Jerez, southern Spain. It is built for 70 dogs but there are 190 there, mostly they will be killed. Amongst the dogs were 35 galgos taken there by the hunters. Pro-Galgo reports on their German website that 80 dogs were saved by various associations both in Spain and abroad. This is a basic translation.
As one can imagine, the animals did not have much quality of life with the overcrowding which is illegal in a municipal dog pound. Olivenza Perrera at Badajoz has the worst reputation in Spain; it is claimed that the perrera Gesser in Jerez is in comparison a relatively humane system, there the animals are fed sufficient food, there is a vet on site daily to check for infection, wounds etc. It is claimed the animals are euthenaised as humanely as possible!
Volunteers say that the perreras are really not to blame for the dog abundance, which is entirely on account of the hunters who take 90% of their galgos directly to the perrera, as well as all the individuals who take their unwanted animals to be killed at the perrera.
You can see photos of some of the galgos saved on the Pro-Galgo website and some more in Spanish on Noble Galgo

It is claimed the animals are euthanaised as ‘humanely as possible’. What does this mean? Good god there is only one way to do it humanely! It is so tragic that this has to be done at all!
Hi
As you say, what is humanely? The claim is that it is not a slow painful gassing or poisoning death……………that the killing method in Olivenza is worse. Its all worse – animals shouldnt have to die needlessly. Life is too valuable.
Thanks for caring and supporting.

It would be better if the HUNTERS were enthanaised.
SO TRUE!!!

After reading (and crying, then ranting and raving) through Beryl’s book, all I can do is support Galgos rescue (we have 2 siblings rescued by Scooby) by raising money and awareness and also by knowing that there is a special place in hell (In Dante’s version, it is the seventh circle) for those that abuse these gorgeous hounds.

Hi
Thanks for buying the book and
commenting………hope it helps explain the problems faced by those fighting
for a better life for the galgos in Spain………..and showing also that there
is legislation there to help them, if the legal system was not corrupted by
hunters.
Bless you for adopting, and doing what you can to
publicise their plight.
Thanks for reading and caring
