International Day of the Dog is now into its 6th year, always on the last Sunday in April. 2011 so happens to also be Easter Sunday, so I held my fundraising IDOD Dog Walk a week early on 17th April. The sun shone brightly on St Pardoux with over 50 dogs and their loving owners turning up for a leisurely stroll along the delightful lanes and tracks which surround this small village in Western France, where I live.

Cheap accommodation in Spain, book into a perrera!
Gesser is another perrera in Jerez, southern Spain. It is built for 70 dogs but there are 190 there, mostly they will be killed. Amongst the dogs were 35 galgos taken there by the hunters. Pro-Galgo reports on their German website that 80 dogs were saved by various associations both in Spain and abroad. This is a basic translation.

Publicity for Podencos – help and forever homes wanted
For many years Rick and Lesley Beauchamp in the UK have been helping rehomed podencos rescued by SARA Lanzarote; virtually the only chance of a loving forever home is on mainland Europe. Thanks to Ed of Podencoworld for forwarding this clip of a BBC interview with Lesley. Please contact Ed or SARA Lanzarote if you are interested in helping these fabulous hounds.

Galgos saved from death – please donate to vet fees
The perreras in Spain are full to bursting with abandoned dogs, especially galgos now that the hunting season is drawing to a close. Despite all the ones rescued from Jerez perrera, Cadiz, there are still more than a couple of dozen there, awaiting a painful death. At El Paraiso perrera, they are feeding the galgos, hoping someone will rescue them. Several have been taken to foster homes already, and two more were taken out last weekend. White ones, which were once regarded as THE most important galgo to the Spanish aristocracy.

Scooby needs collars to sell – can you help?
With the hundreds of animals to care for, especially the lastest 130 galgos from Cadiz, Scooby is desperately needs to raise funds. Here’s a plea from Diane at Scooby.
Dear Friends,
The Scooby Shop at the shelter is in desperate need of fancy martingale collars. The shelter sells these collars to make money for the animals in the shelter. They are a huge hit at events and Scooby Open House Days as well as on adoption days. As you can imagine, they look beautiful on the Galgos!

Join the Campaign – Write to your MEP now!
A reader in the UK has taken up the plight of the galgos in Spain with her MEP. Derek Vaughan, one of the Labour MEP’s for Wales has replied that he ‘was very concerned about the problem and has tabled a Written Question to the Commission to bring it to wider attention and see what can be done to help end this unnecessary suffering’.
Derek Vaughan needs the support of as many other MEPs as possible. Please write to your MEP and ask them to support the Written Question. Below is a sample letter which is a variation of the one to the president of the European Commission already on Galgo News.
